Next Sunday is the "Big Game" between our Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. It is estimated that at least half of the entire U.S. population will watch at least part of the game – that's over 155 million people! And what do most people do while watching the Super Bowl – they chow down!

A few fun facts to share with your friends and family:

  • The Super Bowl is the second largest "food day" during the year, with the top spot going to Thanksgiving. Most Americans double their daily calories on Super Bowl Sunday compared to any other day.
  • According to the Snack Food Association, Americans will eat 33 million pounds of food in one day.
  • 31 percent of game-watchers will order delivery or take-out.
  • The average game-time eater will consume 1,200 calories in four quarters plus halftime.
  • One out of 12 Super Bowl watchers is there only to watch the commercials, and it's estimated they consume more calories than others out of sheer boredom. 

And while chicken wings, pizza and beer sales skyrocket on this unofficial holiday dedicated to football and food, we hope you will consider inviting Motts Channel Seafood to the party.

Super Bowl 50 is in San Francisco. Cioppino is San Francisco's signature dish, but seafood lovers everywhere will keep this recipe close to their hearts.

Serves 10.


Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • 4 cups seafood broth, chicken broth, or clam juice
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans fire-roasted diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 12 Motts Channel Seafood littleneck clams, scrubbed
  • 1 pound firm white fish such Motts Channel Seafood grouper or halibut
  • 1 pound raw Motts Channel Seafood shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 pound fresh Motts Channel Seafood Jumbo Lump crabmeat
  • 1/2 pound Motts Channel Seafood squid, bodies sliced into 1/4-inch rings and tentacles halved (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Sourdough bread
Directions

1. Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook 7 to 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in bay leaves and next 5 ingredients. Cook 2 minutes.
2. Stir in broth and next 3 ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes.
3. Stir in clams and white fish; cook 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp, crab, and squid, if desired. Cook 5 minutes or until seafood is opaque and clams open wide. (Discard any that do not.)
4. Ladle cioppino into bowls, and top with chopped parsley. Serve with sourdough bread.
