Usually I can make my mother a bouquet for her birthday with the first tulips, lilacs and fruit tree blossoms. This year I had to buy flowers from the store. Mother nature is a little up and down this spring--gracing us with alternating snow storms and 70 degree days.
We took a chance and seeded some beets, carrots and spinach before snow came and covered the seeds with a crop blanket. It will be really interesting to see if they come up in the next couple of days
We're always glad to have our large hi-tunnel--which already has peas and spinach well on there way. Our seedling greenhouse is also packed with seedlings waiting for the right time to be planted out--after hard frosts have passed us by and the ground is dry enough to work.
This week we planted about 500 fruit trees, an assortment of apples, plums, pears, quince, peach and mulberry on our new land--the monarch farm. This was our first time working the soil here and we were so glad to see the biggest worms we have seen in each of the 500 holes we dug. Next week we will be working on infrastructure projects in addition to cutting up potatoes for planting, getting up a deer fence and waiting for the moment mother nature gives us clearance to begin planting like mad outdoors. So far we are still on track to start deliveries for our A week schedule on May 30th mostly because of our gigantic hoophouse(mother nature has not allowed for much to happen outdoors yet). If anything changes and we need to start later we will be sure to keep you updated.
We have some good news and bad news. The good news is that our CSA is almost full. The bad news is that if you haven't yet renewed your membership--time is running out. We had to close several of our pick-up locations and home delivery because we have no more room in that delivery vehicle. We still have spots available on our Tosa route and at our Brookfield and Tosa pick up-sites--but don't wait too long because there are only 10-15 spots remaining.
