Dear Friends,

I have had a lot of friend time this summer and it has given me an opportunity to think about what kind of friend I am, how I can improve, and what kind of friends I value. I think it comes down to three things, reliability, compatibility and a final less tangible thing — being there for you unconditionally. It means offering a shoulder to cry on when things go south and donning the pom-poms when good things happen. A dear friend rides the waves with you - the ups and the downs, celebrating the milestones joyfully and riding the bumps with your hand in theirs. What are the characteristics that you feel are vital to being a good friend? Please share them with me here.

SAM'S CENTS

Why Sleepaway Camp

There are four days until my trio, ages, 8, 11 and 13 return from sleepaway camp! It is safe to say that we miss them more than they miss us. Some of you have asked: “Why sleepaway camp? Why seven weeks?” We send them for all of the things they can’t get at home.

Here are some of the reasons:
1. Learning to share a bunk aka live with a variety of personalities.
2. The sense of independence that comes from living without parental hovering.
3. Seven weeks without screens!
4. A basic proficiency for things like diving and sailing and baseball and volleyball and skills that we can’t possible cover properly.
6. The confidence that comes from arriving at camp without friends and returning with a new set (separate from school friends)
7. The opportunity to form lifelong bonds.
