Hey <<First Name>>,

I hope you're enjoying your summer so far!  Why does it always feel like summer is the shortest season of the year??  It isn't fair!  Hopefully you're having fun vacations, delicious barbecues, and great times with the family.

Fighting the Fitness Funk

Since completing the 1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut Half Marathon in mid-June, I've been in a bit of a running and fitness funk.  Not to mention, my 2 weekly fitness classes at work are done for the summer, which really kept me in line.  So motivation is at the lowest that it's been all year!

Are you in the same boat as I am?  It's hard not to be when there are so many more fun things to do in the summer than purposely get sweaty!  Here are some suggestions to stay active this summer:
  • Sign up for a 5K or 10K this summer.  Running in the heat can be really tough, so make it less painful by picking a shorter distance.  On August 30, I'll be running the Philly 10K!
  • Look for free workouts in your community - and go!  Outdoor yoga?  Group bike rides?  Boot camp?  They're out there, and they're usually free! Check your local paper for upcoming events that may interest you.
  • Try a free app like Nike Training Club.  I really love this app, and you can find great workouts varying from 7 to 45 minutes to keep in shape.   I really need to work on this one!
  • Hit the pool or beach - and actually get in!  I know that when I go to the beach, I'm working on my tan, not burning calories!  But you can swim, play games in the water or even play volleyball on the beach.  Anything to keep moving!
  • Start training for fall races.  It's that time again...I am finally back into training mode and I'm so happy!  While I still haven't figured out what races I want to do in the September/November time frame...I'm getting ready!

Tips for Buying New Shoes

Asics Gel Cumulus

From October 2014 to June 2015, I logged over 400 miles in my Adidas Supernova Glide 6, which is a lot for one pair of shoes to handle!  With fall races approaching, it was time to handle unfinished business:  new shoes! So I went to Road Runner Sports and went shopping!  I followed all the right steps on how to buy running shoes....and realized that the Asics Gel Cumulus (pictured above), were NOT a hit!

Here's what you need to remember when buying new shoes:
  • It takes time to get the right pair, especially when changing brands.  You have to be patient and really make sure that your new shoes feel right.  I can honestly say that I should have tried the Asics on the treadmill, rather than jogging around the store.  I had 3 runs after purchasing the shoes, and after my 11 miler - I was done.
  • If you buy your shoes early in the day, they may not feel the same when you run.  You should always try on running shoes later in the day to more accurately mimic the condition of your feet while running - i.e., they swell!   Otherwise, you can end up with the wrong sized shoes.
  • Trust your instincts.  If the shoes just feel "okay", don't buy them.  That's how I felt about the Asics.  And every time I buy Asics, they hurt my feet and I have to return them.  After 3 times, I think I've finally learned my lesson!
When I was in the store I was torn between these Asics and Mizuno Wave I will be returning the duds and getting the Mizunos that in hindsight did feel a lot better!   Stay tuned!
