Pelican "Poop" Island

"All disease begins in the gut."

Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine

Yep, I said it “POOP!”  From my 9 year old’s excitement of telling me about his swim to Pelican “Poop” Island while on a recent fishing trip, did I find the desire and, yes, even excitement to share with you all the joys that our poop holds. Sound ridiculous? Well, it isn’t.  Poop is an essential bodily function that, although an embarrassing topic, it is essential that we talk about it.

Have you ever wondered if your poop looked “normal”? Do you know if you are moving your bowels sufficiently? While these questions may be too embarrassing to ask, the answers to these questions are the key to optimal health.

In reality, many Americans move bowel movements less than once a day when we really should be moving them 2-3 times a day! I have had some RED clients tell me that they move their bowels less than 3 times per week. That is not good. The facts are simple: (i) the less we move our bowels the more stress there is on our digestive system and our immune system; (ii) failing to eliminate means that more toxins are just sitting in our bodies; and (iii) unless you "poop" enough, molecules like gluten and casein and other foreign microbes (that are never meant to hit our bloodstream by the way) leak through and wreak havoc in our bodies. Yuck!

That havoc that I refer to is also called “leaky gut.” The medical term used is “increased intestinal permeability.” The prevalence of this condition is rising due to the highly processed foods we eat and the overly sanitized environments in which we live. Toxins are creating permeability in our guts so that foods that we may have enjoyed for years are causing allergies and other ailments. Along with the increased prevalence of leaky gut, there is a parallel increase in autoimmune diseases.  As many of you know, I too, have suffered from autoimmune conditions. There are almost 100 different autoimmune conditions that are diagnosed daily including allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, digestive diseases, arthritis, thyroid conditions, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, chronic fatigue, IBS, autism etc. Today, 1 in 6 Americans struggle with autoimmune conditions.  That is an astonishing 50 million Americans and growing!

It turns out that our poop tells a pretty good story about what is going on in our bodies. Check out the Bristol Stool Scale below. What does your poop tell you?

In addition to what our poop may be telling us. Here are some other signs of leaky gut:

  • tired, sluggish
  • bloating, gas, heartburn
  • food sensitivities
  • brain fog
  • skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, dark circles under eyes

So what can you do to get moving those bowels again? First start by eating clean, organic, unprocessed foods that are found in nature. You should focus on making each meal plate to be 75% vegetables and fruits and 25% other (e.g., meat, fish, grain, dairy). I know I say this all of the time, but second, you must drink water. Water, water, water. Finally, if necessary, you may consider taking probiotics.  Probiotics will help your body move that food through the digestive tract making the most efficient use of the nutrients you are eating.

Yes, you too can start to move your bowels more frequently and experience greater digestive and overall health and well being.  You may even notice improved energy, glowing healthy skin, pain free joints, mental clarity, hormone balance, increased metabolism, clearer sinuses and better moods. So this “poop” is really good stuff even though it may stink a little ;)
