April Newsletter

Happy New Year! This is the first newsletter of the 2016/17 membership year.

If you have renewed your membership, thank you, and if you are a new member, thank you, and welcome to WAC.

If you have not yet renewed your membership and wish to remain a member please do so now as your subscription is overdue and your membership may be ended.

The clock change at the weekend caught out a few runners in the Trowse 10k, I hear, but not anyone from WAC, I hope.  The good news is that it gives many of us much greater flexibility in our training programmes and, for those of us who run in the evening out of choice or force of circumstance, the chance to try some different routes.

It also marks the end of the Thursday circuits, soon to be replaced by track sessions.

And it means the we're hitting the marathon season - Paris, Manchester, Brighton, London and Bungay to name but a few.

Our runners continue to go from strength to strength - for confirmation just take a look at the current placings in the Leathes Prior Grand Prix Series and at the WAC County Championships medal haul from the Broadland Half Marathon.

Happy running.

Tony

PS  If you are a Wordpress advanced user and could spare time for a 10 minute chat I'd appreciate it as I am looking to set up a WAC archive.

Subscription renewal

The new membership year starts on 1 April 2016 and subscription payments were due before that date if your membership is to continue uninterrupted.  So, if you'd like to remain a member please pay your subscription now.  The new membership form is here.

Points from events that you take part in whilst your subscription is overdue will not be counted.

2016/17 membership fees are £32, and £27 for additional members at the same address.  The second claim subscription is £19.

With no additional charges for coaching sessions, circuits, refreshments and the like, at 61p per week the membership fee still represents excellent value for money.

Membership cards will be sent by email.

April Club Nights

  • Monday 4 April 2016 - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 11 April 2016 - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 18 April 2016 - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 25 April 2016 - Normal Club Night.
We are continuing with the Monday night recovery runs as an option for those wanting to back off a little from their usual training regime.  If you're willing to lead a recovery run please mention it to Kim or Tony.

We would ask you to follow the guidance for such runs that are here and on the notice board.  You should also be aware of the risk assessment that's here.

If you're looking to take part in a recovery run please have a word with Tony on the night.

March Race of the Month - Broadland Half Marathon

The race was fully subscribed with the limit being reached and entries closed months before the race.

There were 378 finishers, 26 of them from WAC, with many of the WAC runners setting PBs on what is far from being an ideal PB course.

Alex Smith was second lady overall.

Andy Preston was the first M50-54. Sharon Hurren, Rebecca Faircloth and Jen Rudd were first, second, third respectively F40-44. Cindy Burgess was second F65.

County medals went to these individuals:

Andy Preston (Gold M50)
Alex Smith (Gold F40)
Sharon Hurren (Silver F40)
Rebecca Faircloth (Bronze F40)
Dee Middleton-Hall (Bronze F50)
Cindy Burgess (Silver F65)

and to these team members:

Steve Ely (M40+ Bronze)
Andy Preston (M40+ Bronze)
Kristin Barnard (M40+ Bronze)
Tony Beales (M40+ Bronze)

Alex Smith (F40+ Gold)
Sharon Hurren (F40+ Gold)
Rebecca Faircloth (F40+ Gold)

Jen Rudd (F40+ Bronze)
Louise Barker (F40+ Bronze)
Julia Loyd (F40+ Bronze)

What a great set of results for the WAC runners!  Congratulations to all of the prize winners.

It was great, as ever, to see so many WAC members out along the course and at the finish line supporting the runners.

March social run

The March Social Run was cancelled as Roy and Tony had other commitments and no-one else stepped forward to lead it.

April social run

Due to a rather congested calendar, there'll be no social run in April.

May social runs

The next social run is on Sunday 22 May 2016, starting in Colney Lane and taking in part of the scenic valley of the River Yare.

We're planning three groups, paced at around:
  • 8 min/mile
  • 9 min/mile
  • 10 min mile (or slower - to suit slowest runner).
We'll run for around an hour and meet up back at the cafe in Earlham Park for coffee and a cake.

Put the date in your diary (and 12 June for a beach run).  Both runs will move off  at 8.30am.

2015 Club Rankings

The 2015 Club Rankings, lovingly and painstakingly prepared by Eva Osborne, are available here.

WAC Committee

If you think that you'd like to give something back to the Club and to contribute your views please think about joining the Committee at the reconvened AGM in May.

Please get in touch with Tony if you'd like to talk about it (in confidence, and without obligation, of course).  And, if you'd like to help more with the Club's activities, perhaps with the occasional event, but don't what to join the Committee do please let Tony know.

Awards for achievement

The new WAC Club Year brings a new basis for the award of points in recognition of racing and contributing to the Club.

Points will be easier to accrue than on the "old" basis.

Points will be awarded according to distances, raced, team positions, setting of club records and participation in club activities.  Additional points will be awarded in respect of the Race of the Month and the Parkrun of the Month.  Awards range from a certificate (100 points) to a technical shirt (400 points).

As ever, racing points will be based on entries in the diary.  Although some results get put in by Eva Osborne, it is your responsibility to ensure that your results and times are recorded.  If your result isn't in the book, it doesn't get counted.  And you cannot accrue points whilst your subscription payment is overdue .

There's a full explanation of the new points awards here.

PS Club night on Monday, 4 April 2016 will be your last chance to collect your 100 point award for 2015/16 if you've won one and haven't yet got it.  There's a list of the 100 point award winners here.

Social Event - Ten Pin Bowling

A date for your diary!

Hollywood Bowl
7.30pm
Saturday, 30 April 2016.

If you'd like to come along please sign put your name on the sign-up sheet at Club Night and make payment or let Emma Fickling know.  You can email Emma here.

£11.15 per person, payable in advance.

Ekiden Relay - Sunday, 17 July 2016

For over 20 years Ipswich JAFFA have been staging the only Ekiden Relay held in the UK.

The 26.2 mile race is run by teams of six as a relay.  There's a 7.2km leg, 3 legs of 5km and 2 legs of 10km.

We will be entering four teams and there are still a few places left.  So if you didn't put your name down and would like to take part in this very sociable event please email here.

Round Norfolk  Relay - Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September 2016

This year will be the 30th Round Norfolk Relay, a race around the coast and inland boundary of Norfolk, a distance of over 196 miles, with 17 legs, varying between 5.49 and 19.67 miles, some of them overnight.

Although the Committee agreed that the Club would provide funding towards two teams this year, the number of runners wanting to take part means that we'll be entering only one team.

We don't need to decide yet, but it looks like being a club team, which must comprise at least five ladies and at least six masters (which can include ladies).

Thank you to those who have offered assistance as drivers, timekeepers, cyclists (to accompany runners) and other helpers.  We'll be in touch with you personally very soon.

Thanks also to those who have offered to marshal at Geldeston roundabout. Again, we'll be in touch with you personally very soon.

Emma Fickling and Sharon Wray have offered to act as the team organisers and co-ordinators this year.

Circuit Training

The current season of Thursday night circuit training sessions organised by Kim Reader have concluded.  Our thanks to Kim for organising them again.

Virgin Money London Marathon - Sunday 24 April 2016

Our club places in the London Marathon went to Rebecca Riddoch, Raphael Silver and Nicola Day.

Unfortunately, Nicola succumbed to injury after the point had been passed for someone else to benefit from the place but if you'd like to go to London to support Bex, Raph and the other WAC runners who are taking part Emma Fickling is organising a trip.

Contact Emma here if you're interested in being a part of the supporters' group.

Good luck to the competitors!

Race of the Month - April

Great Yarmouth 5m series Race 1
Wednesday, 27 April 2016

You can enter online via RunBritain here and BookitZone here and Runner's World here.  Please note that if you enter through RunBritain you are unable to purchase a series ticket and must enter each race individually.

Postal entry is available here.

This is the first race in the series with further events taking place on 11 May and 25 May. The 11 May event is a Norfolk Grand Prix event.

The three race series takes place on the fast and flat two lap course along the seafront and offers a great opportunity for a PB.

WAC Awards Night

The WAC awards night, at The Maids Head Hotel, Norwich on Saturday 12 March 2016, has been the subject of a separate newsletter.

Organised by Emma Fickling, the event received some very positive feedback and plans are afoot for a celebration adopting a similar format in February 2017.  The date will be announced as soon as the venue is confirmed.  It would be lovely to see even more members celebrating in 2017.

Thursday Nights

The last of the winter Thursday evening sessions at the Police Station and of circuit training was on 31 March 2016.

Before the track sessions start there'll be sessions at Earlham Park in April:
  • 7 April 2016 - Dave Hazleton
  • 14 April 2016 - Karl Chapman
  • 21 April 2016 - Dave Hazleton.
Meet at the Colney Lane car park, setting off from there at around 6.35pm. We run through to Earlham Park, where the session takes place, and do a recovery run back. These sessions are geared to all abilities and aspirations although please bear in mind that Earlham Park is off road and has some unavoidable hills!.

It is expected that the sessions on the grass running track at Hethersett Old Hall School will start n Thursday 28 April 2016.  Sessions are at 6.30pm (for 6.45pm).  Please park at the Norwich end of the site and use the path in front of the gym to access the running track.  Do your warm up laps freestyle on arrival.  These sessions are geared to all abilities and aspirations.

Norfolk Road Race Fixture List 2016

The latest (third) version of 2016 Norfolk race fixture list available here.

As you can see, the Norwich Half Marathon has disappeared (it is moving to the Spring, with the next running in 2017).  What isn't shown is that there's going to be, for one year only, a second Trowse 10k, in the Autumn slot that it will have in future.

Leathes Prior Grand Prix Series 2016

As you'll see from the 2016 Norfolk race fixture list (available here) there are ten races in the Grand Prix Series which count towards the prizes.

The placings after the first three races (the Broadland Half Marathon was the most recent) are available here.  There are quite a few WAC members with names in the placings.

The remaining races selected to form the 2016 Grand Prix Series are:

  • 3 April - Wymondham 20m (restrictions apply to WAC members)
  • 8 May - Dereham 10m
  • 11 May - Great Yarmouth 5m
  • 15 June - Wroxham 5k
  • 26 June - Humpty Dumpty 10k
  • 14 August - Great Yarmouth Half Marathon
  • 23 October - Holt 10k.

Anyone can take part in the Grand Prix Series. All you need to do is enter the Grand Prix races in the normal way and then look out for your name in the GP standings ...

Ages are as at 31 December 2016 with masters in five year age groups from 40 to 65+.

At every GP race the winner in each age group scores 100 GP points, second place scores 99 GP points and so on.

Although the final GP standings will count a runner's best seven performances from the ten available races, you don't need to do seven races to count in the final GP standings but it's clearly a good idea to do as many as possible.

The GP administrator for 2016 is Pat Brightman.

WAC 20 mile Race - 3 April 2016

We've over 360 entries at the moment.

If you've volunteered already, thank you.  You should by now have received an email (or three) from Karl Chapman describing your allotted duties and your time and place to report.  If you're feeling guilty about not having volunteered, or you're now unexpectedly free on Sunday morning, you can still email Karl here to offer your services.  Cakes are also still in demand.

This is an important race in the Norfolk road running calendar, and used as a warm up race by many of those running spring marathons.  This year it will showcase WAC even more, as it is a race in the Leathes Prior Grand Prix series (see elsewhere in this newsletter).

Let's hope for ideal running conditions and a great day for WAC.

Round Norfolk Relay - Request from organisers

Three years ago volunteers from Dereham, Coltishall, CONAC and Thetford stepped in to keep the event going.

The RNR is in need of a safety officer and, at the end of this year's event, the current secretary and course manager are standing down. In respect of the latter two roles the RNR says that it would be beneficial to have a new volunteer step up before the event so that the role can be explained.

If you are interested please contract Neville Knights (contact details are available from Tony Richardson if you don't have them).

Midweek Winter Cross Country - East Anglia League

The last race was at Catton Park on 11 March 2016 and followed by the awards presentation.

Unfortunately the results are not on the website but if anyone has them I'll be happy to include them next month.

In the 2015/16 season WAC members competed for the Sportlink team.  We are looking into the feasibility of having a WAC team for 2016/17.

The East Anglian Cross Country League website is here.

Wherryman's Way

If you are contemplating one of your long runs along Wherryman's Way please note that it is closed indefinitely (until the summer at least) near Hardley Hall/Hardley Flood, Loddon due to dangerous bridges.

Marriott's Way

Marriott’s Way is closed between Costessey and Drayton for surface improvements until 8 April 2016.
