July Newsletter

The most memorable thing about June this year was the weather with the second Wroxham 5k being cancelled as the heavens opened over Wroxham and the following day the track session being cancelled as the same thing happened at Hethersett.   Love our English weather!

Thank you to everyone who responded to the request for volunteers to help with groups on club nights, Kim will be taking advantage of your offers in the weeks to come.

Those of you who came to Club on 27 June will know that it has been noted that the recently introduced "recovery runs" on a Monday night, whilst being enjoyed by many, had not been as inclusive as they were intended to be with people occasionally being left behind. There are many reasons runners may choose not to join in a coached session, eg raced the day before, racing later in the week, illness, hangover or coming back from injury etc.  It has therefore been proposed to trial the notion of  Monday night "easy run/s". Anyone not wanting to join a coaching session will be invited to meet in the Rugby Club near the bar by the window at the end of announcements and discuss your preferences with everyone else who's there, with the aim of forming groups running various distances and paces to suit everyone.  Each group should then agree a route and stick together (make sure you know who is in your group!) stopping to regroup from time to time with the faster runners running back if necessary to ensure that no-one runs or goes back to club on their own. Feedback on how this works out will be welcomed.
On behalf of the Committee

  • Monday  4 July 2016  - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 11 July 2016 - Ed Burton 5 mile Time Trial (Race #2)
  • Monday 18 July 2016 - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 25 July  2016 - Normal Club Night
Thursday night track sessions continue at Hethersett
Note:  David Hazleton will be leading a hill run at Earlham Park on 4 August.  Meet at the Colney Lane car park at 6:30 pm.

Ed Burton Memorial 5m Series Race #1

The first race in this three race series took place on 20 June. With 46 people completing the course, many good times were recorded.

A big "thank you" to Terry Brannan for organising the races and to the other Club members who gave up their evening to assist. A special thank you to Tracy Salisbury for the cakes at the end!

Race #2 will be taking place on Monday 11 July, meet at the War Memorial, Middleton Street in Wymondham at 6:30 to register and warm up ready to start at 7:00. There will be no club meeting at the Rugby Club on that day.

June Social Run

About 15 people turned up for the social run at Sea Palling on Sunday, 12 June, with several brave souls also going in for a swim.  This was an "out and back" run with many runners reaching the Lighthouse before turning round and running back.  The weather was good, although warmer than the overcast sky might have indicated. Then to the café for tea and bacon rolls - perfect!  Thanks go to Roy Harvey for organising this event.

Race of the Month - June

Wroxham 5k Series Race #2
Wednesday 15 June 2016

It began raining at around 6:30 when everyone was arriving and as we all huddled together in the Race HQ the thunder and lightening started and the heavens opened.  At 7:00 it was announced that the start would be delayed by 15 minutes at which time the situation would be reassessed. Then the announcement came that it would have to be postponed to another day.  Although disappointing to have a race cancelled when you're all geared up to run, everyone agreed with the Race Director's decision to put safety first. (With the timing mats floating on 2" of water it might have proved difficult to time in any case!)

Race #3 in the series, which is a County Championship race, will go ahead as planned on Wednesday 6 July and Race #2 has been rescheduled for Thursday 21 July.

Race of the Month July - Ekiden Relay - 17 July 2016

The teams have all been chosen now and Tony will be sending out  information to all runners before the day.  If you would like to come and support you would be more than welcome, its a great day out and there are still spaces on the minibus if you don't want to drive. The minibus will be leaving the Rugby Club at 7:00 am and returning around 5:00 pm.  Contact Tony if you would like a space (cost £8 per person). See panel on the left for details of venue etc.

Thursday Night Track - Flying Coach Session - Thursday, 14 July 2016

It would be great to get as many WAC runners as possible to our Flying Coach Session on Thursday 14 July. Paul Evans (Olympic athlete and a winner of the Chicago Marathon) will be coaching the track session at Hethersett.  This is a great opportunity to be coached by a former Olympian and is open to runners of all abilities and coaches from both our Club and other clubs.

This will be held at the Old Hall School Hethersett and will run from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.  Paul will lead a coaching session lasting for about an hour and then there will be time for a question and answer session at the end.

Please park at the Norwich end of the site and use the path in front of the gym to access the running track.  If you come by bike please use the same route to the running track.

July Social Run - Help Needed

The social run this month is on 31 July and is a recee of the  Round Norfolk Relay - Stage 5, Cley to Cromer. We are looking for a volunteer to lead the 10.81 mile run at a 9'00" to 9'30" pace. Volunteers also required to sort out cars for the finish at Cromer to bring runners back to Cley.  Please contact Emma Fickling or Sharon Wray if you can help or  email

Round Norfolk Relay

Wymondham have entered a team for the Round Norfolk Relay which is taking place on 17/18 September. It is a relay race around the coast and inland boundary of Norfolk, a distance of over 196 miles, with 17 legs, varying between 5.49 and 19.67 miles, some of them overnight.  We do need the additional help of cyclists to ride around with the runners so they are never on their own and also volunteers to help with marshalling.  If you would be prepared to help out for a few hours, please contact Sharon Wray.  Many thanks.

Race Director

We are delighted to announce that Andrew Lane has offered to take over the role of Race Director for both our races.  Apart from being an accomplished and experienced runner, Andrew was instrumental in setting up the parkrun movement, in which he’s still involved at an international level.  Since moving to Norfolk a few years ago, Andrew has also set up the Norwich Junior Parkrun, was instrumental is setting up the Gorleston Junior Parkrun, and has helped establish Parkruns in Holkham and Lowestoft.

Our two annual races, the New Years Day 10k and the 20 Miler in March/April are important to our Club, both for the money they bring in which helps greatly with our finances but also to enhance the reputation of the club throughout Norfolk in particular and the racing community in general.  I am sure Andrew will receive the ongoing help and support of the race committee and all members of the Club.

Committee Changes

Sadly for us, having been our Treasurer for over two years now, due to outside pressures on her time, Sharon feels that she can no longer carry on in this role.  We are, therefore, looking for a new Treasurer to take over from Sharon.  Someone with some accounts or bookkeeping experience or who has carried out the role of Treasurer before would be ideal.  But, if you have a good head for figures and would like to give this a go, you would receive help and support from Sharon and the rest of the Committee.  If you would like to volunteer, either have a word with Sharon or Tony or email here.

Membership Secretary
Sharon had been combining the jobs of Treasurer and Membership Secretary for the past two years and Al Bowen has kindly offered to take over the role of Membership Secretary from her and will be starting this job very shortly.

I am sure we would all like to thank Sharon for all the hard work she has put in over the last two years it really has been appreciated - thank you Sharon.  However, she will still be an invaluable  part of the Committee!

Upcoming Social Events

Saturday, 2 July 2016 - City of Norwich Lord Mayor's 5k
Come along and support our runners in this tough event.  Meet in Tombland for the race start at 4:50 pm, then afterwards join us at the Glasshouse, Wensum Street NR3 1LA for drinks and/or a meal.

Sunday, 24 July 2016 - Norfolk Sportive 25/50/100
A family friendly classic cycle sportive with  25, 50 or 100 mile route options and all under 16's ride for free when accompanied by a full paying adult. Starting at The Rugby Club at Little Melton, this year’s route winds its way around South Norfolk taking in lovely country lanes on our familiar training routes, including Hingham, Wymondham and Stoke Holy Cross, depending on which distance you opt for. This event sold out last year so it is advisable to book in advance.  There's more information here.

Sunday, 21 August 2016 - Tour de Broads
The Richardson's Tour de Broads for 2016 has an updated route offering 25, 40 and 100 mile options with more Broads, more villages, "bigger and brighter all day festival ambiance and activities". There's also a new venue - the PedalPark on the old Coltishall Airfield at Scottow. Plenty of parking, easier access and a new ticketing process that requires no on-the-day registration.  There's more information about the Tour de Broads here.

Monday, 22 August 2016 - Club BBQ
The Committee has decided to go back to the previous format of holding our annual BBQ on a club night.  There are plans in place to have a surprise social run beforehand - you'll have to turn up on the night to find out what the surprise is!!!  Needless to say, it will be for all abilities - you can run as fast or as slow as you like! Then, back to the club for a FREE barbecue and, hopefully, the Rugby Club will open up its bar for us on the night.

Finally, whilst it's neither a Club social event nor a Club fixture, there are a number of WAC members taking part in the Outlaw Half (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run) at Holkham Hall, Wells-next-the-Sea, NR23 1AB on Sunday, 3 July 2016, and there looks as though there'll be a large contingent of WAC members providing support.  Camping is available on-site, which is just as well as swim start times are between 6.30am and 7.30am!

To book your pitch for your tent, caravan or campervan look here.

There's more information about the Outlaw Half here.
