August Newsletter

What a great month for WAC with club records broken or equalled, county championship medals won, PB's gained and no less than 28 WAC runners achieving top 20 status in their age group in the Leathes Prior Grand Prix to date.  So well done to everyone who has raced this month no easy feat given the high temperatures experienced at many of the races.

Don't forget the free WAC BBQ on Monday 22 August. With a surprise fun run beforehand and the bar open at the club house, it should be a good evening.  If you're injured and can't run at the moment - come along to the free BBQ anyway, it will be starting at around 7:45 pm.  Oh, and did I mention the BBQ is free!
On behalf of the Committee

Ed Burton Memorial 5m Series Race #2

The second race in this three race series took place on 11 July. Many thanks to Terry and his team of helpers for organising this.

The final race - Race #3 - will be taking place on Monday 1 August. Meet at the War Memorial, Middleton Street in Wymondham at 6:30 to register and warm up. There will be no club meeting at the Rugby Club on that day.

Longstanding Club Records Broken/Equalled

Andy Preston broke the longstanding record for 5k in the Male 50 category twice in one month!  The previous record of 18:02 was held by Terry Brannan and Andy managed 17:51 at Wroxham on 6 July and 17:49 two weeks later, again at Wroxham.  It is worth mentioning here that Andy is Norfolk County Champion M50 in 400m, 800m,5k, 10k and half marathon.

Jack Gillick gained a massive 40 sec PB at the Wroxham 5k held on 21 July to beat the previous Male 25 club record for a 5k race with a time of 15:57.  The previous WAC record for this age group had stood for 28 years and was created by John Harding in 1988.

Sharon Hurren had a memorable run at the Humpty Dumpty 10k at the end of June when she equalled the W45 record of 42:38 set by Jenny Christian in 2002. (Picture from the Nelson Knee Knobbler).

Race of the Month - July

Ekiden Relay
Sunday 17 July 2016

24 WAC runners and some very welcome supporters shared a day at the annual Ekiden Relay at Woodbridge School, a 6 runner relay over a marathon distance. From a non-runners perspective it was a glorious summer's day. From a runner's perspective it was VERY hot.

The results were close, with only just over three minutes separating our first three teams. The winner, by just over a minute, was Team Burgess (Tash Rout, Carl Hipperson, Oliver Timpson, Cindy Burgess, Andy Preston and Ivan Colman):

1st Team Burgess 3:24:19.2

2nd Team Lock 3:25:32.9

3rd Team Jones 3:27:22.4

4th Team Fickling 3:40:23.9

The best WC 5k leg was run by Danny Reeb, in 20:47, the best WAC 7.2k leg was run by Sam Russell, in 27:50, and the best WAC 10k leg was run by Andy Preston, in 40:05.

Particular thanks to Sam Russell, Andy Preston and Roy Harvey for stepping in for those unable to take up their places. Also to Marianne Defernez for timekeeping.

Race of the Month August -
Run Norwich 7 August 2016

Entries have now closed for the second "Run Norwich" (the first one took place last year).  The start this year is on Gentleman's Walk which should hopefully iron out the problems with congestion experienced last year at the start.

If you're not running or helping out - come along and support.  The race starts at 9:30 am. More information about the race here.

Thursday Night Track - Flying Coach Session - Thursday, 14 July 2016

There was a fantastic turn out for the 10K race based Flying Coach Session led by Paul Evans.  Thanks to Kim for organising this.

August Social Run - Help Needed

The planned social run this month is on Sunday 28 August and is a recee of the  Round Norfolk Relay - Stage 1, King's Lynn to Hunstanton. We are again looking for a volunteer to lead the 16.81 mile run at a 9'00" to 9'30" pace. Volunteers also required to sort out cars for the finish at Hunstanton to bring runners back to King's Lynn.  Please contact Emma Fickling or Sharon Wray if you can help or  email

August Social Event - Club BBQ (FREE!)

Monday, 22 August 2016
We are holding our annual club barbecue at the Rugby Club on Monday 22 August. There will be a surprise fun, social run beforehand which  will be for all abilities - you can run as fast or as slow as you like! Then, back to the club for a FREE barbecue and, hopefully, the Rugby Club will open up its bar for us on the night.

Help out at the Round Norfolk Relay

Its not too late to if you would like to help our runners on the Round Norfolk Relay taking place on 17/18 September.  We do need the additional help of cyclists to ride around with the runners so they are never on their own and also volunteers to help with marshalling.  If you would be prepared to help out for a few hours, please contact Sharon Wray.  Many thanks.

August Social Cycle Ride

Sunday, 21 August 2016 - Tour de Broads
The Richardson's Tour de Broads for 2016 has an updated route offering 25, 40 and 100 mile options with more Broads, more villages, "bigger and brighter all day festival ambiance and activities". There's also a new venue - the PedalPark on the old Coltishall Airfield at Scottow.
