December Newsletter

First of all, apologies for the mix up with names in last month's Newsletter, it was of course Angie Bear who completed  the Norfolk Coastal Marathon, a tough off road course. Well done Angie!

Special request: could all parkrunners please ensure that your parkrun profile shows your club as Wymondham AC ( if you're a first claim member).  This is because when compiling the race diary we use  a function on the parkrun website that allows results for each weekend to be obtained for all the members of a club, but it will only works if it's in your profile.  If it isn't there the result doesn't go in the race diary!

The Norfolk Road Race Fixtures list  for 2017 is now available on the Athletics Norfolk site here.

Our last run before Christmas will be on 19 December when we will have our traditional "Christmas lights charity run" around Wymondham town, then back to the Club afterwards for a hot drink and mince pie!  Don't forget to bring some money for the charity collection!

Because Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, it means we wont be back at club until Monday 9 January, although there will be a normal Police Station session at Wymondham on Thursday 5 January and, possibly, Circuits at Hethersett too (to be confirmed).

The Committee would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Cindy
On behalf of the Committee

London Marathon 2017 - Club Place Ballot

The ballot for the 3 club places in the Virgin Money London Marathon took place on Monday 14 November.  (All  clubs affiliated to England Athletics get a small allocation of places based on number of members).  We are pleased to announce the first three names drawn all qualified for a place and, therefore, the places go to:

Marina Murdoch
Patrick Larke
Wendy Larke

Congratulations go to all three and we wish you good luck with your training.

Winter Time Trial Dates

The final of the Winter Time Trials takes place on Monday 12 December - you are eligible to enter if you finished in two out of the three heats which took place in October/November.  The handicaps for the Final are based on the times achieved in the heats.  So, in theory, everyone arrives back at the same time!!

New Year's 10k

Entries for the WAC 2017 New Year's 10k are now closed as we have reached our limit of 800 participants! Please note that the date has had to be changed to Monday 2 January, because the Ex-Servicemen's Club has cancelled our booking as the result of a flood.

We will now be based at Central Hall.  The race will start at 10.30 and the course is the same as for 2016, starting and finishing in Lady's Lane, just over the footbridge (the same finish as our own Ed Burton Memorial 5 mile races).

Andrew Lane is the Race Director and is collecting names of volunteers.  There is a sign up sheet at the club every Monday, but please email Andrew at andrewghlane@gmail.com if you are unlikely to be at the club in the next few weeks, but would like to help.  Our biggest requirement is for marshals out on the course.

WAC members can only participate in the New Year's Day 10k every other year. WAC members who do take part MUST either help before the race (either on the day or before the day clearing Lady's Lane) or provide a volunteer on the day.

Leathes Prior Grand Prix Celebrations 2016

The Athletics Norfolk Road Running Committee/Leathes Prior Grand Prix celebration evening took place at the Maids Head Hotel on 11 November.  More than a dozen WAC members and partners were there and enjoyed the buffet, dancing and mixing with other friends and runners from across Norfolk.

I am also pleased to say that WAC members picked up 5 awards on the night.

Andy Preston was 1st in the Grand Prix in the Male 50-54 age category and also picked up gold in the Norfolk County Postal Marathon Championship.  This means that Andy has won 6 out of a possible 7 County golds this year:  400m, 800m, 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon only missing out on the 10 mile where he won silver!

Jen Rudd also came 1st in the Grand Prix in the Female 40-44 category.
Cindy Burgess gained 2nd place in the Female 65+ category.
Paula Greatbanks achieved 3rd place in the Female 40-44 category.

Many congratulations to all four.

Parkrun Celebrations!

There was a good WAC turn out at Norwich parkrun on Saturday 19 November to see Rodney Freeburn complete his 250th parkrun.  Still competing at over 70 and finishing every race with a smile on his face, he is an inspiration to us all.  Well done Rodney.

World Championships Winner

Anne Martin is back from the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth Australia, bringing with her a new World Record in the 2000 metre steeplechase!  Anne was the only GB team member to bring back a World Record, knocking 2 minutes 5 seconds off the previous record! Her total medal haul in the Championships was one gold, four silver and two bronze.  Congratulations to Anne for a truly fantastic achievement.

(Pictured here at  the Great Yarmouth 5 mile in May this year, gaining the British Record in her age group.)

Another First for Jack!

Only two weeks after winning the Holt 10k, Jack Gillick has gained another win, coming in first at the Bure Valley 10 mile in a time of 56:24 .  Congratulations Jack, you're running so well at the moment - well done!
