July Newsletter

We've just had the wettest June on record .... which ended with the hottest weekend of the year! Crazy British weather - but it didn't stop our members hitting the road or trails and achieving fabulous results!  Team work was the name of the game - whether it was using all our team target training sessions to smash the target races, entering as smaller WAC teams for a relay race, or taking a team bus on a pilgrimage to Bushy Park - we are Team WAC!
The month ahead looks equally promising - especially as we have over 90 members registered and entered for the Run Norwich race, and as always, we know we can rely on support  around the course from those not racing, who give up their time to come and cheer their team mates on  - true Wymondham team spirit!
Tracey - On behalf of the Committee

Please do send race reports or articles of interest to clubnews@wymondhamac.org.uk for consideration - I would love to have a few first hand reports from the field, and team or individual photos sent through  - it doesn't have to be an epic - just a sentence would be sufficient!

WAC Summer Family BBQ - Friday 16 August

Summer is here again which means its time for the annual WAC summer BBQ. This year we have decided to do something a little different. Unfortunately Ketts Park is unavailable on Thursday evenings and also with the summer race season well and truly underway we feel that a lot of club members do not want to miss a Monday coached session or a Thursday track session. With that in mind, we have decided to trial having the BBQ on a non club night,  namely Friday 16  August. We also appreciate that this means another night away from family, so this year we have decided to make the event a family event. The evening will play host to a kids sports day theme with fun team events for adults and children alike, rather than a run around town. So what better way to spend a summers evening than with family and friends, having fun and eating good food?
There will be a bar available and the food will once again be provided by Tony Perkins butchers. As this is a non club night we would like to get an idea of numbers so that we can organise enough food etc, so if you plan on coming along can you please put your names and how many are coming with you down on a sheet that will be available at the next club night at Ketts Park (Monday 8 July).
We look forward to seeing you all there and you’d best get practising your egg and spoon race techniques!

Race Reports

Westminster Mile - 26 May
Apologies for missing this off last months round up!
Well done to Nigel Lambert and Stephen Dady for running the Westminster Mile in the British Masters wave. Nigel earned himself a big PB, gaining the M60-64 club record, with Steve coming in after, also with a PB. and improving his own M65-69 club record by 1 second!
Cindy Burgess was there, but somehow missed out on a photo - she ran it in 7.56, which was a PB and a W70 club record!
PB’s all round on a perfect warm day in London!

Mike Groves 10k - 2 June
It was an absolute scorcher at the Mike Groves 10km on 2 June!  Well done to the 15 WAC runners who braved the heat - congratulations to Sharon Hurren who was first F45-49 in a time of 45:57 and to Yitzak Ben-Aroya who was first M60-64 in a time of 42:40. Also well done to Ian Moore who was second M50-54 in a time of 43:12.
Also well done to Coltishall Jaguars for a first class race. Every club member went out of their way to make sure runners were looked after in the heat and dispatching extra water to all the runners after they had finished.

Bungay Black Dog Running Club 10k Series - Race 1 - 5 June
Well done to our 16 runners competing in the  Bungay 10k, race 1 of 3.  Congratulations to Kirk Bagge for winning the race, and special congratulations to Yvonne Walker making her comeback to racing after over a year out injured, well done Yvonne for getting yourself back to fitness and competing again.  Full results can be found here

Alex Moore Relay - 9 June
What a fabulous turnout we had at the Alex Moore Relay!   We had both quality and quantity!  It’s a really great event and as one of the clubs target races it was good to see a good turn out and some impressive results. The new club gazebo had its first outing and an array of food helped with post race recovery, although sausage rolls and jammy dodgers may not be the best recovery option😩.
Out of the 5 categories up for grabs we won 4 of them - see the photos below!
It was a brilliant team event, and underlined the wonderful team spirit we have throughout the club, well done to everyone involved!

🏆 Women’s Open (Jet, Cat, Lucy),
🏆 Men’s Masters (Johno, Mark B, Stu)
🏆 Men’s Open (Aidan, Kirk Dave),

🏆 Women’s Masters (Alex, Bex,Sharon)

Old Buckenham 10k - 9 June
The Old Buckenham 10k was well attended, with Wymondham runners Ben Rivet and Kyle Brooks taking first and second place, and Steve Dady winning his age category.

Wroxham 5k Series, Race 2 - 12 June
Well done to the 53 WAC runners who were not put off by a bit of rain earlier in the day…… This Wroxham 5K was the biggest ever, with almost 800 finishers. It was the county championships and the standard was high, though most times were a bit slower than in Race 1, because of the amount of water on the road. Cat Cummings won county gold F40 and Alex Smith was 2nd; Cindy Burgess won gold F70; Steve Dady was 2nd M65; Jet Watkinson was 3rd senior lady. Our lady vets won a team prize but we are not yet sure which. Spare a thought for Ben Rivett, Kirk Bagge and Dave Roy who all ran sub 17 minutes but were “only” 4th senior team, with such strong competition on the night.
This was a club target race and Karl's track sessions for this have certainly had some benefit along with all the other structured coaching sessions that our club put out each week, well done to all those runners achieving personal milestones.Well done everyone!.

Photos of Ben and Cat, our first male finisher, and first female finisher - another 573 photos can be found on our Facebook page, or next to the results which can be found here

Speed of Light 5k - Lowestoft - 23 June
There were 10 WAC members ran in this new event - nice and flat, and all finishers received a t-shirt as well as a striking medal!

Bungay Black Dog Running Club 10k Series - Race 2 - 26 June
There were 25 WAC runners at the second Bungay summer series 10K race - (over 10% of the total entry!).  We didn't quite manage a group photo, but here is a picture of our three prize winners: Kirk Bagge, who was the race winner again, Alex Smith 1st F40, and Niki Park 1st F50. Very well done to everyone! The results can be found here
The third and final race of the series is on 17 July.

Humpty Dumpty 10k - 30 June
Fabulous turnout of 66 WAC runners in hot, hot, hot conditions, and our Jet is straight into the EDP as she gained a new PB, and took first place, in 39:54 - see link here.

We had prizes in many of the age categories, and a women's team prize - more details will be read out on Club Night, but the main results can be found here

Cross Country

2019 EACCL SUMMER SERIES Race 2, Cart Gap Beach, Happisburgh 19 June
A brilliant WAC midweek turn out for Race 2 of 3 on the beach at Cart Gap, Happisburgh.  We had 10 runners involved out of an overall field of 32. Richard White was first WAC home and Lisa Greengrass was WAC first lady home. The 5 making up the scoring A team  were Richard White, Kevin Fraser, Nigel Bradley, Nick Poole and Andrew Lane - this result meant our A team remained top of the EACCL Summer Series league table.  Well done to everyone who made the trip over to Happisburgh, thankfully the rain held off, but the going was certainly tough on the sand and shingle, not made any easier by a head wind on the return leg.

The final race and presentations are at RAF Marham on 24th July -  this race is a 5K road race and starts at 2.00pm and NOT 2.30pm.
The format is slightly different from the winter series, with everyone running as team and no individual or gender awards, just 1 team prize for the winners.  Cost is £1 paid on the day and this is to cover end of season nibbles and presentations. These races haven’t in the past been taken as seriously as the Winter League with smaller numbers present, however WAC finished runners up last season and it would be great to go one better this year, and after the first 2 races I believe this is now very much in our own hands, so let’s give it a good go on 24 July and see if we can pick up some silver ware, which will be great going into the winter series later in the year.

That’s it, another relatively short piece again this month, but the fixtures for the forthcoming XC Winter Season are beginning to take shape  - see here, and don’t forget the inaugural 4 race Norfolk XC League this winter as well, dates to be announced.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over at RAF Marham for the 3rd race in the EACCL Summer Series, so let’s go over there and win it.

British Record Achieved at Athletics Norfolk Track and Field Championships 2019

In the recent Norfolk Track and Field Championships a few weeks back, Eva Osbourne achieved a W75 British record for the Mile. We understand that not only did she break the record, it is the first time in British Athletics history that this has ever been achieved!  Congratulations Eva!

Welcome to our new committee member...

David Roy

"I've always been into sport and fitness of some kind, I was actually a member of WAC in 2014 before getting into CrossFit.  I entered a few races earlier last year, joined WAC again and started running more frequently but it was the Round Norfolk Relay that got me hooked, CrossFit fell by the wayside and I haven’t looked back since.
Since then I have been training hard in an attempt to better my 5k and 10k PB times, and to finish as high up in races as my legs will allow!  I hope to go on to take part in longer distance races, however my coach tells me I have plenty of time for that later!
I think the WAC committee already do a fantastic job, and I wanted to join the them in an effort to give something back"

.....and thanks to our outgoing Chairperson!

New Chairperson Tony Beales presents a token of our appreciation to Andrew Lane, Chairperson for the last two years.

Ed Burton Series

We had a record 84 club members take part in the first of the series, and the results can be found on the website here. The second race will be on 1 July, with the final being on 29 July.  All races start at 7.00pm at the level crossing at Wymondham Abbey station and finish in Lady's Lane. Register (free) from 6.30 in the meadow just by the railway. There are awards for the best improvers throughout the series as well as prizes and spot prizes for each race.  We shall need marshals to help run the series, so please do come along even if you don't plan to run.

WAC Charity of the Year

Finbar's Force
We were very pleased to be able to present a cheque to our members Claire and Tristan Cork for their charity Finbar's Force, at club on 11 June.  This was made up mainly of donations from our tea and coffee stall at our races. More details about the charity can be found here.

WAC Kit Update

1. We have paid the first instalment for the bobble hats, so they are definitely on the way!

2. The gazebo has had its first outing at Alex Moore, and will be up at Run Norwich next!

3. I have applied for us to be a Kukri kit hero; Kukri supply the team kit for Athletics England & this would give us access to exclusive Kukri news, from product launches to latest offers, ahead of everyone else. There will also be other incentives such as personal discounts and opportunities to sample and test the latest Kukri Sports products - more of this later.

150+ Points Scheme 2019

June Points Update
Current standings up to the end of June can be seen here

Gavin Hall

The points scheme is explained on the website.
If you have entered a local race as an affiliated member with WAC as your club, or done a parkrun, and have WAC recorded against your parkrun profile, then the likelihood is that your efforts will have been noted. If, however, you have raced further afield, please let us know at club, or if you are not able to make it to the club on any given week, the opportunity to email results in is here.

WAC parkrun News!

parkrun of the month - parkrun of the month for June was at Loch Neaton in Watton. 15 WAC runners took part in the 16th running of this relatively new parkrun location. It’s a well run event with friendly and enthusiastic marshals and the simple loops of the upper and lower sports fields are deceptively tough on the slight incline on the upper field.
Of our 15 runners , Andrew Lane was the first male home with a new PB and finishing an impressive 8th overall. Hot on his heels in 9th position overall was our First Lady back - Zoe Jones. Andi Osbourne also recorded a PB - well done!
Particularly impressive was Richard Tubb pushing his son Freddie round in his buggy which is no mean feat on this course and on such a hot day!
Half of our runners at June’s park run of the month location were trying this event for the first time - it’s a great little course and worth the short trip over to Watton.

Katie Whitmore

parkrun Celebrations and Milestones - Nigel Lambert got in touch to say " just to let you know that I did my 100th trip around Norwich (Eaton Park) parkrun this morning (June 1st). I’ve done a few more parkruns in total but that’s my 100th at Norwich, and what’s more despite the heat I managed a PB, which rounded off the occasion perfectly."
Not only that, a couple of weeks later, (15 June) Nigel wrote again - " following my 100 landmark and PB last time out, I reached another landmark at Eaton Park today - at 61 I’ve now joined the club who have done parkrun in sub 20 min, having run 19:56 this morning. That’s been a dream goal for many years now, I’m a bit stunned, feel a bit lost without my mystical parkrun goal!"   Well done Nigel!

parkrun Tourism - A very special trip down to Bushy Park parkrun happened on 22 June -  with a very early start to get down there for 9am!  The trip was organised by Andrew Lane, who was one of the original 13 who ran the very first parkrun there in October 2004!  Congratulations to Andy Stratton, who completed his 100th parkrun on this trip, where there were 1414 participants!

parkrun pledge day - 1 June

Conley Lane parkrun was celebrating  #GPparkrunPledge day on 1 June. They were delighted to welcome Garry Whiting from Heathgate Medical Practice in Poringland, and WAC member. #GPparkrunPledge day celebrates the first anniversary of the parkrun practice initiative which aims to raise awareness of parkrun in the health sector and to encourage sustained participation by those who are least active and/or who have health conditions. Garry and his practice partners showed parkrun dedication by doing a dummy parkrun in May, as well as posing with our selfie frame.

Please do let me know if you hit a parkrun milestone, (official or arbitrary!), or even if touristing, near or far, by email.
