October Newsletter

As we move into autumn/winter we will, once more, be running in the dark. It is therefore important for your own safety that everyone running on club nights wears either a fluorescent top or hi-viz vest with reflective strips.  Although the Council has relented and turned back on the street lights in Tuttles Lane, there are still many poorly lit areas around Wymondham, and especially around the back of the Police Station, where the lights have not gone back on.  It might, therefore be a good idea to wear a head torch and these can be picked up quite cheaply online.

While talking about safety, can I just remind everyone to ALWAYS use the pedestrian crossing to the left of the Rugby Club entrance when crossing Tuttles Lane, this is for your own safety.

Earlier this year we received a request from some members of the club to look into the possibility of moving club nights to a Tuesday - mainly to avoid a hard training session either after a Sunday race or after a long Sunday training run.  The Committee did look at this in detail but, unfortunately, the Rugby Club is unavailable on a Tuesday and we were unable to find an alternative venue. So, for the foreseeable future at least, we are staying with our Monday club nights. Obviously, when the Rugby Club moves to its new venue the whole issue of where to meet will be looked at again.

September Race of the Month - Round Norfolk Relay

Congratulations to the WAC team of 17 runners who came 21st out of the 58 teams, completing the 198-mile course in a time 25:40:36.

Conditions were gruelling at times, with heavy rain and strong winds, particularly on the early, off-road legs, so a good performance all round.

This great team effort would not have been possible without the help of the team of cyclists, timekeepers and the support crew, and the organisation of Sharon Wray and Emma Fickling.  Our thanks to all of them.

The staging of the race relies on support from running clubs in Norfolk to provide marshals and our thanks go to the WAC members who were marshals at the Geldeston roundabout when the 58 runners passed through on Saturday night.

Final thanks go to Andy and Alison Preston, Ivan, Melinda and Lauren Colman, as well as little Archie, for encouraging the runners throughout most of the race.  The runners really appreciated it!

It was noticeable that many local clubs smaller than WAC fielded two or more teams this year.  If members are up for it, there's no reason why WAC shouldn't put two teams in the 2017 RNR.  More on this in due course.

British Masters Success

Anne Martin took part in the British Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham on 17/18 September and set four W80 British Records as follows:

200m - 44:55sec - W80 British Record - Club Record
400m - 1min 48:53sec - W80 British Record - Club Record
1500m - 8min 21sec - W80 British Record - Club Record
Long Jump 2.46m - W80 British Record - Club Record

Well done Anne - totally brilliant!

Winter Time Trial Dates

The first heat in the Winter Time Trials takes place on Monday 3 October.  Please come to club as normal and register for the Trial before making your way to the start at Hubbards Close.

The revised dates are as follows:
Monday  3 October 2016 - Heat #1
Monday  7 November 2016 - Heat #2
Monday 28 November 2016 - Heat #3
Monday 12 December 2016 - Final

Coaching Pathway

The first stepping stone on the coaching path is the Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) course.  This training course qualifies and insures leaders to deliver safe and fun running sessions.

There is a LiRF Course at Easton College on Sunday, 4 December 2016.

If you are willing to show a commitment to assisting the WAC coaching team between now and the course date, and for at least a year thereafter, the Club is willing to cover the cost of the course or, if the course costs more than £100, to contribute £100 towards the cost (other bursaries may be available).

Please contact Tony if this is of interest.

If you have completed a LiRF course (or similar) and have had practical experience and a desire and commitment to progress to the next level you may be interested to know that Athletics Norfolk is aiming to have a Certificate in Running Fitness (CiRF) course held locally in 2017.  They do, however, need early expressions of interest so please let Tony know if this may be for you.

New Year's Day 10k

Entries have now opened for the WAC 2017 New Year's Day 10k.

This year Race HQ will be the Ex-Servicemen's Club, as Central Hall is used for other events on a Sunday.  The race will start at 11.30 and the course is the same as for 2016, starting and finishing in Lady's Lane, just over the footbridge (the same finish as our own Ed Burton Memorial 5 mile races).

Andrew Lane is the new Race Director and has started collecting names of volunteers.  There will be a sign up sheet at the club every Monday from now on, but please email Andrew at andrewghlane@gmail.com if you are unlikely to be at the club in the next few weeks, but would like to help.  Our biggest requirement is for marshals out on the course.

Please note that WAC members can only participate in the New Year's Day 10k every other year. WAC members who do take part MUST either help before the race (either on the day or before the day clearing Lady's Lane) or provide a volunteer on the day.
