June Newsletter

May was a very busy month in the running calendar and WAC members turned out in force with some great results, so well done to everyone who went out and represented our club!  It was also good to see so many members and family coming out to support.  Thank you - it really does make a difference!

We are pleased to report that WAC has raised over £114 for charity lately - £77.45 for Nelson's Journey, currently our nominated charity, and  £36.90 for Mencap.  Many thanks to everyone who contributed. Click to see copies of the letters of thanks here from Mencap and here from Nelson's Journey .

A quick reminder that notices start promptly at 6:45pm on Monday Club nights so we can be ready to run at 7:00pm.  Please arrive in plenty of time to have a chat, use the bathroom, or do whatever else you need to do before the notices!

June Club Nights

  • Monday  6 June 2016  - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 13 June 2016 - Normal Club Night
  • Monday 20 June 2016 - Ed Burton 5 mile Time Trial (Race #1)
  • Monday 27 June 2016 - Normal Club Night
If you're looking to take part in a recovery run please have a word with Tony on the night.

See elsewhere in this newsletter for more information on the Time Trial.

Ed Burton Memorial 5m Series

The Ed Burton time trial series is named in memory of Ed Burton, an active WAC member who was tragically killed in mortocycle accident in 2010.

The first race in this three race series for WAC members in on Monday, 20 June 2016.  The races are open to all abilities - there's no cut-off.  Meet at the War Memorial at the junction of Town Green and Vicarage Street in Wymondham at 6.30pm.

There'll be no-one at the Clubhouse that night.

We'll be using the "new" route which swings right into Lady's Lane (the same as the New Year's Day 10k).

This race is being run on open roads.  Please:
  • Keep to the left.
  • Listen to the briefing and the marshals.
  • Watch out for traffic.
  • Be courteous to other road users and pedestrians - it's surprising how much interest these races attract from Wymondham residents.
As ever, we are grateful to Terry Brannan for organising the races and to the ten or so Club members who, for whatever reason, don't race, but do give up their evening to marshal.

Volunteers urgently needed

As you may have noticed, we don't have as many coaches available on some Monday evenings as we'd like to have.

Kim Reader is looking for some WAC members wishing to contribute to the life of the Club who would be willing to help the coaches in supporting and motivating WAC runners, particularly in the development and improvers groups.

If that might be you then, whether or not you have coaching experience, Kim would love to hear from you.  You can email her here.

Of course, if you're new to coaching you will receive support and guidance from Kim and the coaching team. And, if that's something you aspire to, they can also offer encouragement towards you obtaining the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) certificate.

Membership cards

Membership renewals are now long overdue.

If you have renewed you will soon receive your UKA registration card (if you've not done so already).  To avoid duplication we will not be issuing WAC membership cards this year although you will be sent an email confirming your UKA membership number (these do not change from year to year so long as your membership is unbroken).

Midsummer relays

The bad news ...

The midsummer relays organised by Athletics Norfolk in conjunction with Bure Valley Harriers which were to have taken place on Sunday, 12 June 2016 have, we understand, been cancelled.

The good news ...

If you entered the midsummer relays you are now free to tcome along to the WAC social run instead (see elsewhere in this newsletter).

June social run - Sunday, 12 June 2016

The June social run is a beach run at Sea Palling on Sunday, 12 June (will hopefully be warmer than the one earlier this year in the picture above!).

We will be setting off from the car park near the Beach Café at 8.30 am - don't forget to bring some change for the car park. All abilities welcome as we will be running an "out and back" route eg half an hour out then half an hour back.  This means that everyone can run at their own pace and we should all arrive back at around the same time!

If you want to lift share, meet outside Argos on Longwater at 7:30 am.

Although not part of the WAC run, you can go for a dip in the sea at the end and Roy and some others from his group of strong sea swimmers have kindly agreed to be on hand in case anyone needs some support. Please let Roy know if you would like to swim afterwards.

Meet in the café afterwards for coffee and cake or tea and bacon butties!

Ekiden Relay - Sunday, 17 July 2016

This is a 26.2 mile race run by teams of six as a relay.  There's a 7.2km leg, 3 legs of 5km and 2 legs of 10km.

If you put your name down for this unique event in the race calendar you should have received an email by now providing you with more information.  If not, please get in touch with Tony asap.

The teams are here.  If you didn't put your name down but would like to take part in this very sociable event please email here - we have a few places left.

Transport has been booked to take us to Woodbridge for this event (although, of course, you can make your own way if you'd prefer to).  Runners, family and supporters are welcome.  The cost will be £8 per person.  We will leave from Wymondham Rugby Club at 7 am sharp, returning around 5 pm.  Please let Tony Richardson know names and numbers.

Round Norfolk  Relay - Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 September 2016

This year will be the 30th Round Norfolk Relay, a race around the coast and inland boundary of Norfolk, a distance of over 196 miles, with 17 legs, varying between 5.49 and 19.67 miles, some of them overnight.

We have entered a club team, which must comprise at least five ladies and at least six masters (which can include ladies).

Thank you to those who have offered assistance we will be in touch with you personally very soon.

Emma Fickling and Sharon Wray are the team organisers and co-ordinators this year. Its not too late to offer to volunteer help if you haven't already done so!

Race of the Month - May

Dereham 10 Mile
Sunday 8 May 2016

Well done to the 32 WAC runners who completed this truly grueling County Championship and Leathes Prior Grand Prix race.  Taking place on the hottest day of the year, for most of us thoughts of PBs were soon forgotten and just getting to the finish line became the only aim!

Despite the heat, WAC still managed to bring home many medals, with the men winning a second and third in the male 40 and male 65+ category and also coming second in the male 40+ team results.  The ladies gained one 1st and three 3rd age category places, also winning 3rd place in the Female 40+ team results.  In the County Championships we had a total of one 1st, two 2nds and three 3rds.  Brilliant result!

Race of the Month - June

Wroxham 5k Series - Race 2
Wednesday, 15 June 2016

The Wroxham 5k - 2  race this year is a Leathes Prior Grand Prix race .

Entry is still open, but if you don't want to run,why not come along and support the WAC members taking part?

Please note that the race starts at 7.15 pm.

Thursday Night Track - Flying Coach Session - Thursday, 14 July 2016

We are pleased to say that we have managed to get coach Paul Evans (Olympic athlete and a winner of the Chicago Marathon) to coach the track sessions at Hethersett on Thurdsay, 14 July 2016.  This is a great opportunity to be coached by a former Olympian and is open to runners of all abilities and coaches from both our Club and other clubs.

This will be held at the Old Hall School Hethersett and will run from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.  Paul will lead a coaching session lasting for about an hour and then there will be time for a question and answer session at the end.

Please park at the Norwich end of the site and use the path in front of the gym to access the running track.  If you come by bike please use the same route to the running track.

Social Events

The following events are planned for July and August.

Saturday, 2 July 2016 - City of Norwich Lord Mayor's 5k
Come along and support our runners in this tough event.  Meet in Tombland for the race start at 4:50 pm, then afterwards join us at the Glasshouse, Wensum Street NR3 1LA.

Sunday, 24 July 2016 - Norfolk Sportive 25/50/100
A family friendly classic cycle sportive with  25, 50 or 100 mile route options and all under 16's ride for free when accompanied by a full paying adult. Starting at The Rugby Club at Little Melton, this year’s route winds its way around South Norfolk taking in lovely country lanes on our familiar training routes, including Hingham, Wymondham and Stoke Holy Cross, depending on which distance you opt for. This event sold out last year so it is advisable to book in advance.  There's more information here.

Sunday, 21 August 2016 - Tour de Broads
The Richardson's Tour de Broads for 2016 has an updated route offering 25, 40 and 100 mile options with more Broads, more villages, "bigger and brighter all day festival ambiance and activities". There's also a new venue - the PedalPark on the old Coltishall Airfield at Scottow. Plenty of parking, easier access and a new ticketing process that requires no on-the-day registration.  There's more information about the Tour de Broads here.

Monday, 22 August 2016 - Club BBQ
The Committee has decided to go back to the previous format of holding our annual BBQ on a club night.  There are plans in place to have a surprise social run beforehand - you'll have to turn up on the night to find out what the surprise is!!!  Needless to say, it will be for all abilities - you can run as fast or as slow as you like! Then, back to the club for a FREE barbecue and, hopefully, the Rugby Club will open up its bar for us on the night.

Finally, whilst it's neither a Club social event nor a Club fixture, there are a number of WAC members taking part in the Outlaw Half (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run) at Holkham Hall, Wells-next-the-Sea, NR23 1AB on Sunday, 3 July 2016, and there looks as though there'll be a large contingent of WAC members providing support.  Camping is available on-site, which is just as well as swim start times are between 6.30am and 7.30am!

To book your pitch for your tent, caravan or campervan look here.

There's more information about the Outlaw Half here.

Norfolk Road Race Fixture List 2016

The Humpty Dumpty 10k, which is close to being full, is also a County Championship race.

Records Broken!

Anne Martin has done it again, not only setting a Club record but also a new British record in her Female 80 age group at the Great Yarmouth 5 mile race #2.  Not content with that, Anne then went on to set a further Club record the following week in the Wroxham 5k.

Eva Osborne (pictured here at Great Yarmouth) took part in the Norfolk County Championships and set a new club record for women 75 over 200 metres.

Andy Preston (pictured here at the Manchester Marathon) also took part in the Norfolk County Championships and broke the club records for 400m and 800m.  These records had stood for 22 and 24 years respectively! Andy also ran in the 1st Wroxham 5k and gained the men's 50+ club record there!

Congratulations to all three - brilliant running!

At the EGM of the club held on Monday, 23 May 2016, a minor amendment was approved to the new club Constitution as adopted in February this year.  The current version of the Constitution is here.
