November Newsletter

October has been a busy running month and shown some great results for WAC members.  Jack Gillick had a fantastic win at the Holt 10k and Julia Lloyd achieved another PB which meant she has gained a PB this year in 5k, 10k, 10m and half and full marathons!  Well done also to all our runners who have completed autumn marathons.  These include Mark Tufts who ran the Abingdon Marathon in Oxfordshire in a brilliant 3:23 and Patrick Larke and Angie Martin who completed  Norfolk Coastal Marathon, a tough off road course.

Many WAC members regularly take part in parkruns, in various locations.  They are a great way for new runners to get into running and racing and several members have joined our club having started off at parkruns.   Quite a few WAC parkrunners have run 100 or  even 150 parkruns, so congratulations to all of them, but a special mention to Rob and Julie Winner who recently achieved 100 parkruns together!

Looking forward to next year, don't forget to reserve the evening of 18 March 2017 in your diary for our Awards Presentation evening.  Taking place once again at the Maids Head Hotel.  It was a great night last year and everyone attending thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also for next year, we did so well in this year's Round Norfolk Relay and had such a great response from members that the Committee is considering putting together two teams for next year's event, a ladies and a mens.  It is usually held over two days towards the end of September and, although not confirmed yet, that would probably mean around 23/24 next year.  More dates to keep free!

Race of the Month - November

Holt 10k
Sunday 23 October 2016

WAC WINNER!
Congratulations to Jack Gillick who came first in this 10k race in a time of 34:24, over 30 seconds ahead of the second runner.  What a brilliant performance!

WAC had 27 finishers in total with several runners gaining PBs.  It was a lovely day with great running conditions on a very scenic route. The multi-terrain, undulating course made it an interesting run!  This was the last in the Leathes Prior Grand Prix series and several WAC runners were running for a place in the league - did they make it?  Come along to the Presentation Event on 11 November to find out!  (Further details later in this Newsletter)

London Marathon 2017 - Club Place Ballot

As a Club affiliated to England Athletics, we get a small allocation of places in the Virgin Money London Marathon. So as to be as fair as possible, these "Club places", for which the normal entry fee is payable, are awarded to eligible WAC members as the result of a ballot.

To enter the ballot you must:
  1. Have been a member (first or second claim) of WAC continuously since 1 April 2016 (or before) and have paid your 2016/17 subscription.
  2. Complete the ballot entry form (click here to download) and return it to the Club Chairman or Club Secretary so as to be received on or before 6.30pm on Monday, 14 November 2016.
  3. When submitting your ballot form apply for membership of WAC for 2017/18 (the form is with the ballot entry form) and make payment of the first instalment of your 2017/18 membership subscription of the same amount as your 2016/17 subscription (this must be paid on or before 6.30pm on Monday, 14 November 2016.  Note that: (a) cheques will be cashed on receipt, whether or not you are successful in the ballot; (b) if you gain a place it will be forfeited if the cheque doesn't clear on first presentation; and (c) that no refunds will be made.  If the 2017/18 subscription is the same as 2016/17 there'll be nothing further to pay, but if it's higher the balance will be due on or before 1 April 2017 – we guarantee that it will not increase by more than £5).
  4. Agree to run the race in a WAC vest without carrying the name or colours of any club or showing the name of any charity or organisation, commercial or voluntary.
Although you do not need to have entered the organiser’s ballot to be eligible for the WAC ballot priority will be given to members who can prove that their entry for the 2017 marathon was unsuccessful in the organiser’s ballot.  Those who didn’t get a Club place in the 2016 London Marathon (whether or not they used it) will take priority over those that did.  Also, first claim members will take precedence over second claim members (as second claim members also have the chance of getting a place awarded to their first claim club).

All this is explained in the ballot application form.

All being well, we’re draw the ballot on Monday 14 November so don’t delay as applications close that day!

Winter Time Trial Dates

The second heat in the Winter Time Trials takes place on Monday 7 November and the third heat on 28 November.  Please come to club as normal and register for the Trial before making your way to the start at Hubbards Close.

The Winter Time Trial is for all abilities and is handicapped, starting with the slowest runners and setting off at 20 second intervals up to the fastest.  You need to have completed two time trials to qualify to run in the final on 12 December.

The dates are as follows:
Monday  7 November 2016 - Heat #2
Monday 28 November 2016 - Heat #3
Monday 12 December 2016 - Final

Have you got a place in a Spring 2017 marathon?

A couple of years ago we organised some, weekend, long (10 to 20 miles) runs for WAC members training for a Spring marathon (or just looking to do a long run in company).

Tony has said that he is willing to do the same thing again in 2017 if there’s enough interest.  The runs would aim to use routes that were suited to the season/weather, would be over progressively increasing distances, give some variety and, of course, end with a coffee and cake.  Tony would aim not to use the same route twice over the longer distances, unless weather dictated otherwise.

There may be a variety of running paces, but it should be possible to accommodate most with some planning (and understanding!).

Your training programme is down to you and this will not be a coached session – it will simply be a case of putting some dates in the diary for those who are interested.

If you’re interested please email Tony during November, letting him know the date of your marathon.

New Year's Day +1 10k

Entries have now opened for the WAC 2017 New Year's Day 10k. Please note that the date has had to be changed to Monday 2 January, because the Ex-Servicemen's Club has cancelled our booking as the result of a flood.

We will now be based at Central Hall again.  The race will start at 10.30 and the course is the same as for 2016, starting and finishing in Lady's Lane, just over the footbridge (the same finish as our own Ed Burton Memorial 5 mile races).

Andrew Lane is the new Race Director and has started collecting names of volunteers.  There will be a sign up sheet at the club every Monday from now on, but please email Andrew at andrewghlane@gmail.com if you are unlikely to be at the club in the next few weeks, but would like to help.  Our biggest requirement is for marshals out on the course.

Please note that WAC members can only participate in the New Year's Day 10k every other year. WAC members who do take part MUST either help before the race (either on the day or before the day clearing Lady's Lane) or provide a volunteer on the day.

Leathes Prior Grand Prix

Picture shows last year's prize winners.

The Athletics Norfolk Road Running Committee/Leathes Prior Grand Prix celebration evening is on Friday 11 November at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich. This is a celebratory evening for all the runners in Norfolk - not just those who have completed the LP Grand Prix Series.

Tickets are £15 per head, which includes hot & cold buffet, disco and presentations. They can be purchased online via Chip Timing UK or the Athletics Norfolk websites.

It was really a fun evening last year and we have several members in the running to receive awards.  So come along and party with runners from all the clubs in Norfolk and support our WAC winners!

Coaching Pathway - Reminder

Final reminder that there is a LiRF Course at Easton College on Sunday, 4 December 2016.   This Leadership in Running Fitness training course qualifies and insures leaders to deliver safe and fun running sessions.

If you are willing to show a commitment to assisting the WAC coaching team between now and the course date, and for at least a year thereafter, the Club is willing to cover the cost of the course or, if the course costs more than £100, to contribute £100 towards the cost (other bursaries may be available).

Please contact Tony if this is of interest.

If you have completed a LiRF course (or similar) and have had practical experience and a desire and commitment to progress to the next level you may be interested to know that Athletics Norfolk is aiming to have a Certificate in Running Fitness (CiRF) course held locally in 2017.  They do, however, need early expressions of interest so please let Tony know if this may be for you.

If you enter as a team, only one member of your team is allowed on the course at any one time, and everybody in your team must complete one whole lap. At the end of the 24 hours, the team in each category who has completed most laps, wins!

The event takes place on 22 and 23 July 2017.  At the moment, we would just like to see how many people might be interested in taking part. If you think you might be interested, please contact Tony.
