February Newsletter

We have had some quite tough weather for running in the last month with cold, ice and freezing fog.  It has therefore been great to see really good numbers turn out for our Monday Club night and especially good to see many new runners coming along to try us out!  A big welcome to all of them.  A special thought goes out as well to all those training for spring marathons in this cold weather.

Our New Year's 10k was, once again, a great success. Many thanks to Andrew Lane for organising his first event as Race Director for WAC and thanks to everyone who helped out on the day - see below some comments put together by Andrew from emails he received after the event.

This year, the awards presented will be based on our new Awards Scheme published earlier.

  • Cross country runner of the year – Male
During the course of February you will be sent an email inviting you to vote for the winners from a nominated shortlist. Do please register your vote!

WAC Charity of the Year
During the course of the year the Club has a number of opportunities to raise money for a charity. The charity chosen by members currently is Nelson’s Journey, to which WAC contributed over £50 from the Christmas lights run alone plus other monies from things such as contributions for massages at the NY 10k.

We now need to choose a charity for 2017/18. When completing the voting slip for the “Runners of the Year” awards please remember to complete the section asking you to nominate your preferred local charity.

New Year's 10k

We are very grateful to everyone who helped out at the New Year 10K.  There were 672 finishers and it was again a very successful and popular event, which received a great write up in the EDP.

We received lots of good feedback from runners, especially about the friendly and supportive marshals.  Here are some of the comments we received:

“Thank you for a well organised and totally enjoyable run today.  The route was beautiful, the marshals encouraging (some slightly bonkers!!!) and the cake delicious!"

"It was brilliantly marshalled by loads of friendly people.  A great event."

”Thank you for all your work in organising a great race today.  I am just coming back to running after
a car accident last year and was one second off my PB, so over the moon!"

"Just wanted to thank club and members for the race organisation on the 2nd.  I enjoyed the day, everything was well organised and the support of all the race marshals was great.  My first race in 30 years and enjoyed using new technology like the timing chips especially as it showed I did achieve my goal to run under an hour!"

"I would like to thank all at your club for such a lovely race.  Everybody was so friendly and encouraging, the route was beautiful and it was really well organised.  As a beginner who's started to brave turning up to these things by myself it was a lovely morning."

"Thanks for another good New Year run.  Well done with the sunshine too."

"Didn't do this event last year and missed it.  Back this year and really enjoyed it.  Thanks to all - well organised, good atmosphere and cheery marshalls."

"I just wanted to drop a note thanking you and your team in an excellent event and organisation of yesterdays 10k race in Wymondham."

"I have never entered such an event before and only started running in October last year!  The atmosphere and people made it a fantastic experience for me in my preparation for this years London Marathon which I have entered as a charity runner for Children with Cancer.  I would like to pay special thanks to the marshalls who were out there in the freezing cold and really support you on the course ... amazing every one of you."

WAC 20 mile race - 26 March 2017

We now need to start thinking about our next race in March.  As always we will need helpers for the day and the volunteers' list will be available every Monday night - so please sign up!

Normal rules apply to any WAC runner wanting to enter the race, ie you can only run it every other year and, if you do enter, you will either need to provide someone to help out on the day in your place or offer to help yourself before and/or after the race.

January Social Run

There was a great turn out for our first social run of the year along the beach at Sea Palling to Happisburgh lighthouse and back.  A lovely day for a beach run with the weather being slightly warmer than in some previous years.  Well done to the Café owners who coped well with all the extra customers afterwards!

January Race of the month - Freethorpe 10 mile

Great to see so many (34) WAC runners complete the first race in the 2017 Leathes Prior GP series.

Congratulations to all runners, especially the many who took advantage of the near-perfect conditions and achieved PBs and those who took trophies home.

Thanks also to those members who came to support, especially those who offered their time to GYDAC to act as marshals, whilst also cheering on the WAC runners. It's good to see Wymondham AC helping at other events.

Make a Difference in 2017

Fantastic article in the EDP on Andrew Lane who is backing the "Voluntary Norfolk Make a Difference in 2017" campaign. Andrew was in at the beginning of the parkrun phenomenon and is an Ambassador for parkrun in Norfolk.  Read the full article here.

Developing Running Coaches

We have received an email from the Chair of Athletics Norfolk to say that England Athletics have recognised the need for a CiRF course for Norfolk and the suggestion is, at the moment, to hold a LiRF course in the spring (provisional date is 12 March) followed by a CiRF course in the summer - probably at King's Lynn.

If anyone is interested in either or these courses, please contact Tony.

LiRF - Leadership in running fitness - see information about what this course involves here.
CiRF - Coach in running fitness - see information about what this course involves here.

Round Norfolk Relay 16-17 September 2017

The Round Norfolk Relay (RNR), which is in its 31st year in 2017, is a team race that mirrors the county boundary over a distance of 198 miles, divided into 17 unequal stages. Norfolk's enormous skies, vast sandy beaches, open spaces and picturesque towns and villages, with their attractive cottages and medieval churches, all contribute to making the race a unique running experience, with on- and off-road legs and around 60 teams running through the day and night to finish at King’s Lynn on the Sunday morning.

The Committee has decided that, subject to getting enough runners and support, WAC will enter two teams into the 2017 Round Norfolk Relay.

There will be a men's team, which Karl Chapman has agreed to organise, and a ladies’ team, that Roy Harvey and Tony Richardson have agreed to organise.

Sign up sheets for runners and volunteers (whose help is needed to accompany and transport runners, with time-keeping, logistics and marshalling) will be available at Club Nights in February.

If you’ve been involved before you’ll know how much fun this unique event is and just how much team work is involved between runners and volunteers.  If you haven’t, but you may like to get involved please take a look at the RNR website here and ask someone who has been involved in previous years.

If you do sign up as being interested in running please bear in mind that you may be called on as a helper!.

Ekiden Relay and Alex Moore Relay

In recent years the Committee has organised participation by Wymondham AC in the annual Ekiden Relay organised by Ipswich Jaffa Running Club.  We did this with a view to enabling members of all abilities to participate in teams whose abilities as a team were matched as far as possible.

A considerable amount of planning went into this, but, with the number of WAC teams dwindling, the Committee has decided not to organise entries for this year’s race.

Of course, if you would like to join the event, in which over 150 teams compete, why not put together your own team of 6 WAC runners (the legs are 1 x 7.2km, 3 x 5km and 2 x 10km) and enter as a WAC team.  This year’s race, which is on grass on the playing fields of Woodbridge School, is on Sunday, 16 July 2017.

If this is of interest and you’d like to benefit from the priority booking let Tony know.  Otherwise, just go the Ekiden Relay website here (although at the time of writing the page hadn’t been updated for 2017).

On the subject of relays, you may also be interest in putting a team together for the Alex Moore Relay, a relay race around the village of Skeyton.  This year’s race takes place on Sunday, 11 June 2017.   The course is 2.2m on road, with teams consisting of three runners with the 1st runner running one lap, the 2nd and 3rd runners each doing two laps and all three runners together running the final lap.  There’s more information here on the Coltishall Jaguars’ website, although at the time of writing the page hadn’t been updated for 2017.
