June Newsletter

At our Annual General Meeting, held on 15 May, Tony Richardson, Roy Harvey, Sharon Wray and Al Bowen announced that  they were stepping down from the Committee.   I'm sure we would all like to join together to thank them for all the hard work they have put in over the last several years for the benefit of the club and its members.  Many thanks to all of you it has been greatly appreciated.

In a similar vein, Terry Brannan has stepped aside from organising our annual "Ed Burton 5 mile Time Trial" series, at least for this year. Once again, I'm sure we would all like to thank Terry for the work he has put in over the years.  Happily for us, Ivan Colman and Andrew Lane have agreed to run the time trials in his stead.
On behalf of the Committee

Ed Burton 5 Mile Time Trial Series

June sees the first of our annual 5 mile time trial series races.   This is a series of three 5 mile races for all club members taking place over the summer months.  The first one this year will be on 19 June.  The course undulates around country lanes and will finish in Lady's Lane, as last year. It is open to all members to take part whatever standard you are and the runner who improves most over the series will receive an award at the Annual Awards Night.

Meet at the War Memorial at the junction of Vicar Street, Middleton Street and Town Green, NR18 0PN from 6:30 - 6:45.

The other two races will take place on 10 July and 14 August.

Background:    Ed Burton was a club member who played an active part in the club.  He joined in 2002 and represented WAC at many races and was a member of the club's Round Norfolk Relay team in 2006.  He was tragically killed in a road accident on an eening in 2019 when we were due to run one of the 5 mile time trial races.  The race was cancelled that night out of respect the series re-named the "Ed Burton Time Trial".

From our new Chair - Andrew Lane

I am very pleased to be your new Chair and am looking forward to the next two years.  I joined the club four years ago when I moved to Wymondham, from London, and received a warm welcome.  My first time at the club was a cold, frosty night in January and I thought there might be about 20 runners.  In fact there were 80 and I have been impressed ever since by the enthusiasm and commitment of club members.  The coaching structure is much better than in my previous club, despite its greater size, and the Monday evenings are really well organised.  We owe a lot to Kim Reader and her team of coaches and we want to expand this group in the next few months.

My own journey in running started just over 20 years ago. I entered a 10 mile race with friends in West London, with hardly any training.  But I enjoyed the day and we then did a half marathon.  This was hard and I told people immediately afterwards I would never do a marathon…..  But I changed my mind within a week and we entered the New York marathon, which was fantastic.

So I got completely hooked on running in all its forms, and at all distances.  My favourites are parkruns and marathons.  Norfolk has a very good race structure and I have enjoyed finding lots of new events in the last four years, after my move.  I have been fortunate in having few injuries over the years, and I still love going out of the house for a run, several times a week, just as much as when I started.

I took over as WAC Race Director last year and have therefore organised one new year 10K and one 20 mile race.  Both of these received great feedback from runners and I received really good support from WAC members and volunteers to make them happen.

Thanks to Tony Richardson and the previous committee, many of whom are staying on, and I hope we can continue their good work.  The next club event is the Ed Burton 5 mile race on 19 June.  This year I would like to make it an even more popular event, perhaps with some additional awards on the night for each race, as well as for the series as a whole.  We will discuss this at the next committee meeting, on 13 June, in time for the first one.

Happy running to all!

Andrew Lane

2017 AGM Report

As many of you will know the Annual General Meeting of the club was held on 15 May 17 with over 70 members attending which is a record.! Thank you to all who attended and the idea of holding the meeting prior to the evening training session will be one that may well be carried forward in future years.

Reports from the Chair, Treasurer, Head Coach and Race Director were circulated prior to the meeting and comments and questions were invited.

Points raised from the reports and in Any Other Business included:

Buoyant state of club funds and how to spend it!

Possible new venue

Points Scheme Review

Website and other means of communication in the club

Better quality club vests

Volunteering within the club

These items will be taken forward by the new committee when it convenes in June.

As well as reports, the club unanimously elected a new Chair in Andrew Lane and two new committee members, Gavin Hall and Steve Ely.  Standing down from the committee were Tony Richardson as Chair, Roy Harvey, Alex Bowen and Sharon Wray.  Thank you to all of them for their service to the club during their time on the committee. The new committee is now as follows:

Andrew Lane - Chair

Rob Winner - Treasurer

Dave Hazleton - Secretary

Committee members:  Cindy Burgess, Bex Coleman, Gavin Hall, Steve Eley, Tracey Salisbury.

If you have any burning issues that you would like the committee to consider then please let one of the committee members know.
