Gab Titui's May E-News
Entries are in and we are busily preparing for the 2016 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award, set to open to the public on 16 June 2016. Koeyma Eso, Au Esoau, Thank You also to all of the artists, cultural practitioners and interested community members who joined us for the 2016 Torres Strait Arts Industry Meeting last month, hosted by the TSRA Culture, Art and Heritage Programme. It was a great opportunity to come together and a privilege to be joined by some of our nation's leading professionals in the field of intellectual property law and Indigenous cultural property rights. For anyone who missed it, or consumers interested in learning more, you'll find a link to an online copyright guide in this month's e-news, as well as other information on our programme's activities and opportunities for artists in the region.

2016 Indigenous Art Award
Entries are in for the 2016 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award! We've been busy cataloging works from right across the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area in preparation for the exhibition opening on 16 June. We also had the recent pleasure of welcoming guest judge Bruce McLean, Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery|Gallery of Modern Art, and cultural advisors Gabriel Bani and Elsa Day who are the lucky first to lay eyes on the new works. All works in the exhibition have been created within the last 12 months and together give audiences a first look at new works and developments in our region's art industry.

Bruce, Gabriel and Elsa will be back joining us at the opening of the 2016 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award in June.

Torres Strait Arts Industry Forum
We were happy to be part of the 2016 Torres Strait Arts Industry Meeting held on Thursday Island in April. The forum brought together over fifty artists and cultural workers from across the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area to find out more about intellectual property law and how it relates to traditional Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal concepts of cultural ownership. Participants were able to gain a better understanding of their intellectual property rights thanks to the participation of guest presenters including representatives from peak national bodies including the Arts Law Centre of Australia, the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland, Viscopy|Copyright Agency and leading Indigenous cultural intellectual property lawyer and advocate Terri Janke.

The forum is the third consecutive annual event presented by the Torres Strait Regional Authority Culture, Art and Heritage Programme.

Traditional Language Revitalisation
Revitalisation of traditional languages in the Torres Strait will receive a boost with the development of the first Traditional Language Plan and Charter. The plan and charter have been developed by the Torres Strait Language Reference Group, formed during the 2015 Torres Strait Language Symposium hosted by the Torres Strait Regional Authority Culture, Art and Heritage Programme. The Reference Group is made up of selected representatives of each of the six language and dialect groups of the Torres Strait, and chaired by Kala Lagaw Ya speaker of the Maluyligal nation Mr Cygnet Repu.

QAGOMA Kids' Workshops
Thirty-two children attended our school holiday workshops on Thursday Island, taking advantage of the Queensland Art Gallery|Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) regional touring program, APT8 Kids on Tour. The workshops tie in with the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at QAGOMA and give children locally the chance to engage with the art practice of some of the Asia Pacific region's leading contemporary artists. The workshops included a range of interactive, hands on activities, delivered by our gallery staff - and local artists - Elsie Passi, Kailu George and Sam Bon.
