Director's note

Digital world
I will start this column by congratulating Anne Morée with an excellent PhD defense Monday. Both her trial lecture and her defense were done on video, and I was very pleased to see the very professional performances in terms of the presentation, the discussions, and the formalities. More than 100 people followed the show. I will also congratulate her supervisor Christoph Heinze and the others who contributed to this great performance.

The Leader group of the Centre meets regularly, and as far as I can tell there is a high level of scientific activity despite difficult working conditions from many. New results are being published every week, and as previously forecasted Bjerknes publication number 2000 is just around the corner. Many of you are working very hard to prepare the best possibly proposals for the May 20 deadline, and I wish you all success.

For obvious reasons media has been less focused on climate these days. But the many parallels between the covid-19 and climate crises, and the discussions on the “greenness” of the economic stimulus packages, are hooks that we can use to show our relevance. The coming Fridays we plan several På Vippen events where scientist from our Centre and invited experts discuss emission effects of corona, climate-and pandemic modelling, people’s attitudes to political measures, and the present window of opportunity.

Norway is now gradually opening up after seven weeks of lock down. At UiB home office is still the main rule, but from next week employees who finds this demanding can access their workplace on campus after approval from the faculty or departments. All employees given access must undergo protective measures training, a very short course with a final “exam” in the form of a quiz where you need to have 11 out of 11 answers correct (I failed my first attempt because I was too thorough with the hand washing :=).

I will end this column by sincerely thanking Leonidas Tsopouridis for the great work he has done to establish and coordinate the Bjerknes PhD forum, and for having been such a good ambassador for the PhD students in our Leader group. Since Leonidas now steps down to concentrate on finishing his own PhD, I am very happy that Sonja Wahl has volunteered to take over the responsibility and do her best to fill Leonidas’ shoes.

New PhD: Anne Morée
Congratulations to our new doctor, Anne Morée, the first Bjerknes Centre PhD defense to be done online.
One of the advantages of a video broadcast, is making it easier for people to congratulate you from anywhere in the world – like opponents in France and USA, as well as parents and family in Netherlands!

Her research at Geofysisk Institutt UiB has been on climate modelling, and diving into how the Southern Ocean moves our climate. Supervisors have been Christoph Heinze, Jörg Schwinger and Mario Hoppema.

Forsker Grand Prix 2020
Forsker Grand Prix is a competition where ten PhD students from Bergen are competing in front of an audience and a panel of judges, to become the best presenter of their research. In the first round, the students will have four minutes to present their research and its up to the audience and the judges to decide which top three will proceed to the second round. Here they will have another four minutes to captivate the audience and the judges. The winner and the runner-up will proceed to the national final. Do you want to participate?
