Congratulations to Senior Interior Design student, Leigh Ann Soistmann, for receiving the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award for our college. Read more about her and her award here.
A+D Director and Professor Henri de Hahn will be offering an off-campus mini Summer Session (July 27 through August 13, 2016) to Paris. The topic of the trip is to immerse students in a "Cultural excursion of the city of Paris through the lens of urban landscapes and its private and institutional architecture and interiors". A more complete description may be found though the following pdf link.

Monday-Tuesday - Please join us for the opening of the Echinit of student work created during this past Fall Riva Residency program . At 2:00 Professor Marcia Feuerstein will give a short introduction to the work and the students will be available to discuss their projects. The exhibit will be up today and tomorrow.

NEW
This scholarship is awarded yearly to an undergraduate student that demonstrates hand drawing skills without the use of a computer. All undergraduate architecture students are welcome and encouraged to compete by hanging a drawing by 11 am Friday April 15th in Cowgill Lobby. One student will be chosen to receive the scholarship award by the second year faculty. Please attach your name and email to the back of your work. Please direct your questions to Dave Dugas.
Early Bird Deadline Approaching
Are you revolutionizing the process and product of architecture? Now in its 10th year, ARCHITECT’s R+D Awards program proudly celebrates the research, materials, and technologies that have advanced the AEC industry at every scale—from design strategies and building systems to revolutionary products, software, and fabrication methods. Winning entries will be published in the print and online versions of ARCHITECT’s July 2016 issue. The awards are open equally to architects, engineers, fabricators, manufacturers, researchers, faculty, and students worldwide. Early Bird deadline April 15, 2016, regular deadline April 20, 2016.

Be Original Americas’ 7-week Summer Design Fellowship program will introduce two college students to all facets of creating innovative, high-quality products, from research, design, and manufacturing to marketing and distribution through hands-on, in-the-field learning. Each section of the fellowship will focus on a different aspect of the process from the perspective of Be Original Americas member companies, supplemented by visits to their showrooms, headquarters, and factories in New York City and throughout the United States. The GREEN Philadelphia program is focused on Sustainable Design and Urban Regeneration and this unique experiential educational model is accredited by our university partner, while exposing students to the complexities of global urban systems. more
DUE FRIDAY
The IAWA Center invites students of the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech to honor IAWA founder Milka Bliznakov through research on women in architecture and related design fields. This research, in concert with the preservation efforts of the IAWA, will help fill the current void in historical knowledge about women's professional achievements. An annual prize of $1,000 is being presented. The first stage is due by April 15, 2016. More information here  Poster
The SOM Prize and Travel Fellowship are two annual awards that are administered as a single competition. The awards are given to students and recent graduates of Architecture, Design (including interior design, landscape architecture, environmental graphics or industrial design ) and Urban Design. Intent to Apply must be postmarked by April 18, 2016. more
Last year, Nicolas Coates, VT Arch '15, was the recipient of the 2015 SOM Prize, a $50,000 travel and research fellowship. more

The teenage family members of seven Brazilian housemaids filmed this award-winning Brazilian documentary. As they train an intimate lens on their daily lives, the viewer is confronted with images that explore the complex relationship that exists between housemaids and their employers, a relationship that confuses intimacy and power in the workplace and provides us with an insight into the echoes of a colonial past that linger in contemporary Brazil.
