Three finalists have been selected for campus interviews in the search for the next dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. more
   As part of the interview and selection process for the next dean, Executive Vice President and Provost Thanassis Rikakis invites all members of the campus community to meet the candidates selected for campus interviews. University and community members are invited to attend each candidate’s open forum presentation on “Future Trends: Visionary Opportunities for the Virginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies.”  The search committee encourages all campus and community members to submit feedback via the online surveys.
Please note that the first two presentations have been uploaded to the website for viewing if you did not get a chance to attend either event. The third presentation will be uploaded as soon as it is available, hopefully by Friday the 14th.

Ecologies of Injustice
Monday, April 10th

This panel discussion brings together scholars at Virginia Tech whose work intersects the concerns of environmental justice, with community members, and interested individuals to increase our understanding of the diffuse ways that environmental injustice is experienced in our contemporary world. The conversation encompasses political, economic, social, and environmental factors that precipitate disproportionate exposure to environmental risk or access to resources and is designed to build bridges across the Virginia Tech campus and greater-Blacksburg community. more poster

Congratulations to 2nd year ARCH student, Cyndy Douglas, for being awarded as part of the top 60 for the AIAS Imagine Competition! She will be going to Orlando in May for a workshop that will allow the group to interact with Imagineers in a 3 day long program. learn more
ACSA Survey 
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture [ASCA] is conducting a study about female students of color and their experiences in undergraduate architecture education, if you are interested please follow this link to information about the survey:
 
For all those interested in joining the travel trip to India during Wintermester 2017, please note the attached link to a Scholarship Application Form that provides all of the necessary information in order to apply for one of three $1,000 Scholarships sponsored by A+D.
Scholarship Application deadline is Friday, April 7, 2017 (electronically to hdehahn@vt.edu).

Empty Bowls
Monday, April 17th
7-9pm
Squires Commonwealth Ballroom
Students and faculty have been making hand-made ceramic bowls all semester and it culminates into one night, next Monday, April 17th at 7-9PM. We sell tickets for admission ($10 for students and $15 for general admission) which allow guests to bring their bowls home with them. The proceeds from the event go completely to a local charity called Micah's Backpack. Micah's Backpack helps provide food for local, low-income children. This event has been growing in success in Blacksburg for the last 5 years, so much so that we've moved from our traditional location to a larger venue at Squires Commonwealth Ballroom. We anticipate over 400+ attendees, meaning 400+ handmade bowls, 40+ gallons of soup, bread, and pastries!

Frascari Symposium III
April 21-22, 2017
Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center
Please join us at WAAC for the Frascari Symposium III on the topic of "Ceilings and Dreams: the architecture of levity" from April 21–22, 2017. All events will be held at 1001 Prince Street in Alexandria including an international array of speakers and an exhibit of Marco Frascari’s and other’s drawings and models (see attached schedule). Of special interest, we will have Marco’s Dream House model on display to coordinate with the launch of his Dream House book translated into English by Federica Goffi. Events begin in the afternoon on Friday with the exhibit opening that evening and continue with more speakers and sessions all day on Saturday

SCHOLARSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES

NEW - To promote and encourage the study of architecture by New York City public high school students through a two-year scholarship to supplement tuition and related costs during their freshman and sophomore years at a NAAB-accredited school of architecture in the U.S. Deadline is May 15th by 5pm. more
NEW - Founded to encourage student journalism on architecture, planning, and related subjects, and to foster regard for intelligent criticism among future professionals. The award is not intended as a prize for individuals, but is intended to support the ongoing publication of student-edited journals whose subject matter could include architectural design, history, and theory. Deadline is May 1st by 5pm. more
NEW - Ideation World at Yale University would like to invite Virginia Tech students with an interest in social innovation design or refugee issues to discuss, network and dine with some of the most influential names in the field, including chief directors of UN Habitat, International Organization for Migration (IOM), diplomats from France, Austria, Ireland, and other eminent architects and academics from Harvard, NYU, and Columbia. The Virginia Center for Housing Research (VCHR) is seeking student applications for the Ragaei Abdelfattah Award. The Abdelfattah Award is presented annually to students who exemplify excellence through scholarship that addresses interdisciplinary research topics around community development and the housing industry. The award provides $500 to the selected student and recognition on the Center's website. Final submissions are due on May 4th. more

CAUS Dean Candidate - Tsai Lu Liu

Tsai Lu Liu is professor and head of the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design in the College of Design at North Carolina State University. Prior to beginning his academic career in 2004, he spent nearly 20 years in the industry, both as a designer and leader in the areas of design, marketing, product development, and product management. He has also served as president of two technology companies, one of which he also founded. An international keynote speaker in the areas of innovation, planning and design, and universal design, he has also built solid partnerships with a wide range of industry sponsors and collaborators on work spanning new product design and user experiences to collaborative workspaces, inclusive design, and construction safety and mobility.
Liu holds an MBA in marketing from Georgia State University and a master of industrial design from Auburn University. more

Please join SOVA for the opening of the next Senior Studio Exhibition. The reception is from 6-8pm on Wednesday, April 12th at the Armory Gallery and includes light snacks and beverages. Event is FREE and open to the public.

National Poetry Month 2017

Art + Architecture Library, 100 Cowgill Hall

In honor of National Poetry Month 2017, the Art + Architecture Library has giant magnetic poetry available on two of our stacks and some “regular size” magnetic poetry on two temporary columns for creating poetry. We also have a pop-up art table with supplies for you to illustrate your own poetry or one of the poems we have available. 
 Take a photo of your magnetic poetry creations and/or your illustrations and post them to social media with hashtag #VTpomo.
