Monday, March 21st - Last day for students to resign without grade penalty. First and required contact for resignation is academic dean of undergraduate student's college (Sonia Hirt) or dean of the Graduate School. Submit completed resignation form to the University Registrar's office by 5pm.
Monday, March 21st - Last day to change grade option from P/F to A-F, 5pm. Visit the University Registrar in 250 Student Services Building to process.

Congratulations to Interior Design Student, Leigh Ann Soistmann, who won the ASID National Student Portfolio Competition! She will be flown to Minneapolis in July to be recognized at the ASID National Celebration awards gala. Click the above image to see it larger, here is an additional spread from her winning portfolio.
 
Check out the great work two of our Industrial Design students, Stephen Lynn and Morgan Matt, have been involved with getting Virginia Tech awarded with a federal grant to benefit entrepreneurial efforts in the region here in this article.
 
Corinne Vassallo, ITDS Student, won second place in the Bienestock National Competition. Congratulations! The Bienenstock Furniture and Interior Design Competition is open to any junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college design program. This design competition will have two (2) categories: Interior Design and Furniture Design. A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to the first place winner of each category. A $1,500.00 scholarship will be awarded to the second place winner in each category.
 
Organizers of the Mitchell Carr Symposium on Creative Uses of Wood in Design invite you to attend a networking dinner and lectures by woodworkers, furniture makers, heavy timber framers, and architects on Monday, March 21. The lectures will be from 1 to 5:30pm, followed by dinner at 6pm, and presentations by the five student teams participating in the wood truck camper competition. You may attend all or a portion of the symposium. All events are free to Virginia Tech students, staff, and faculty, but you must register here. For any questions, contact co-organizer Aki Ishida at aishida@vt.edu. The symposium is co-jointly organized by the Departments of Sustainable Biomaterials; Apparel, Housing and Resource Management; Architecture; and Building Construction all at Virginia Tech.

Thursday-Friday - A History of Tableware, from the Collection of "The Virginia Tech Library of Material Culture" -- a forty-foot long table will display the history of dining implements. 9am-5pm Thursday and Friday, March 17th and 18th in the Cowgill Hall Lobby at Virginia Tech. Bill Green will give a gallery talk and answer questions on Thursday at 10am.

Are you revolutionizing the process and product of architecture? Now in its 10th year, ARCHITECT’s R+D Awards program proudly celebrates the research, materials, and technologies that have advanced the AEC industry at every scale—from design strategies and building systems to revolutionary products, software, and fabrication methods. Winning entries will be published in the print and online versions of ARCHITECT’s July 2016 issue. The awards are open equally to architects, engineers, fabricators, manufacturers, researchers, faculty, and students worldwide. Early Bird deadline April 15, 2016, regular deadline April 20, 2016.

Single or multiple awards up to $2,000. Founded to encourage student journalism on architecture, planning, and related subjects, and to foster regard for intelligent criticism among future professionals. The award is not intended as a prize for individuals, but is intended to support the ongoing publication of student-edited journals whose subject matter could include architectural design, history, and theory. Applications must be received on May 1st by 5:00 pm EDT. No exceptions. If the deadline falls on a weekend, the application must be submitted by 5pm on the following Monday. more

SCHOLARSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES

The IAWA Center invites students of the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech to honor IAWA founder Milka Bliznakov through research on women in architecture and related design fields. This research, in concert with the preservation efforts of the IAWA, will help fill the current void in historical knowledge about women's professional achievements. An annual prize of $1,000 is being presented. The first stage is due by April 15, 2016. More information here  Poster

The SOM Prize and Travel Fellowship are two annual awards that are administered as a single competition. The awards are given to students and recent graduates of Architecture, Design (including interior design, landscape architecture, environmental graphics or industrial design ) and Urban Design. Intent to Apply must be postmarked by April 18, 2016. more
Last year, Nicolas Coates, VT Arch '15, was the recipient of the 2015 SOM Prize, a $50,000 travel and research fellowship. more

This is a call for works of art or design that (i) might fairly be called ‘objects’ by the nascent philosophies of Speculative Realism and Object Oriented Ontology, and that (ii) will throw light on architecture as a peculiar set of objects, phenomena, ideas, relations, connections, skills, materials, obligations, and operations. Digital Submission Deadline is May 2, 2016.
The Journal of Undergraduate Materials Research (JUMR) here at Virginia Tech is accepting applications to become a member of the board for the upcoming volume. Anyone with experience with (or interested in learning) indesign should consider applying for the Layout and Design positions available. The deadline for the application is March 15th.
