Dates & Deadlines
Monday, February 27th  - last day for students to drop Spring 2017 classes without grade penalty. Last day to change grade option from A-F to P/F.
Wednesday, March 1st - Last day to apply for Spring 2017 graduation in order to receive a diploma at Spring Commencement in May and have your name appear in the Commencement Bulletin. You can apply for the degree via HokieSpa "degree menu." Once you apply for the degree via degree menu, then you will appear on all graduation lists for Spring 2017. about commencement

Attention 4th Year Industrial Design and 5th Year Architecture Students:


DEADLINE FRIDAY - The College of Architecture and Urban Studies will be holding its Annual Graduate Student Poster Competition on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 3:30-5:00 on the 3rd floor of Bishop Favrao Hall. Light refreshments will be served. You are invited to submit a poster to be displayed at the competition. The poster should convey the scholarly work that you are doing as part of your degree. Posters should be a maximum of 36"x48". If you accept this invitation, please respond by email to Dee Dee Dudley ( with your name and the title of your poster that you will submit by 5pm, March 1st. The poster must be submitted to the dean's office in 202 Cowgill Hall by 5pm, Monday, March 13, 2017, and should be mounted and ready for us to set up on easels. A panel of faculty members, and Directors of the College Research and Outreach Centers, will jury the posters. First, second, and third prize will be awarded. The jury will provide feedback on all posters.

Undergraduate students at Virginia Tech in all fields are invited to submit a poem to The Steger Poetry Prize contest, established by President Emeritus Charles W. Steger and University Distinguished Professor Nikki Giovanni. The first place prize is $1,100. The second place prize is $500 and third place is $300. The prize is administered by Professor Giovanni and judged by a committee of faculty from various disciplines at the university. Deadline is Friday, March 17th by midnight. submission form

To celebrate Women's History Month, architect and philanthropist Beverly Willis, joins CEO and young entrepreneur Paola Moya of Marshall Moya Design, for a cross-generational conversation on how architecture has evolved in the past half-century. They will also discuss pressing issues design entrepreneurs face today. Student tickets are $10, pre-registration recommended. website poster
NEW - for Spring Break -
  An Alternative Break incorporates a service project impacting meaningful social change, and it functions as a space to learn about perspectives and personal values. 
  This March, we will visit New Orleans for the 6th time for an Alternative Spring Break! We are continuing our partnership with Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO), in an effort to improve the quality of life of low income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans or single head of households with minor children, through home repair and revitalization of New Orleans' neighborhoods. While in New Orleans, we will also have the time to explore the culture: taste the delicious foods, listen to talented jazz musicians, take in the street art, hear stories from locals. 
  As for trip costs, the total price is a sum of $900. This cost covers practically everything from food to transportation to housing.

NEW - Island Design Assembly brings together a team of students and architects for eight intensive days to live off-the-grid while designing and building a project for an island community in Penobscot Bay, Maine. The June session is open to students from all colleges and universities. No experience with design or construction is necessary. IDA is led by McLeod Kredell Architects, and student participants may consider the experience a professional externship with the firm. IDA projects have won three AIA awards for excellence in architecture, and the program is one of sixteen case studies to be featured in the forthcoming book from Routledge Press, The Design Build Studio: Crafting Meaningful Work in Architecture Education. DEADLINE TOMORROW - Be Original Americas’ 7-week Summer Design Fellowship program will introduce two college students to all facets of creating innovative, high-quality products, from research, design, and manufacturing to marketing and distribution through hands-on, in-the-field learning. Deadline to apply is February 28th. more
DEADLINE WEDNESDAY - Hampton Roads Community Foundation is accepting applications for the Enid W. and Bernard B. Spigel Architectural Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. Candidates must be long-time residents of Virginia who are studying architecture, architectural history or architectural preservation. Students must be entering their junior, senior or graduate year of study in Fall 2017. Strong preference will be given to students from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Financial need is required. Applications are due by March 1st. more
DEADLINE FRIDAY - The Partnership’s Public Service Fellows Program provides the opportunity for current students and recent graduates to develop professional skills while helping transform how government works. Applications are due by March 3rd. more
DEADLINE OVER SPRING BREAK - Space Program San Francisco is a research and design workshop exploring how space is made for living and working today. This year, the program will focus on the contemporary work space and its transformation from cubicle to bean bag, from a professional to a personalized environment. Over the course of two weeks, we will visit a variety of pioneering sites in the Bay Area, engage in collective research and design their own architectural proposals that address the new needs for social and private spaces. The workshop will be concluded by a conference and public exhibition of the work. Application deadline is March 10, 2017. more poster, the Politecnico di Milano Consortium, in collaboration with Associazione Italiana Colore, announces the 2nd edition of Color Design & Technology Master's, which is set to start in March/April 2017 and last 12 months. The master courses will be delivered in English language. Thanks to the contribution of the Associazione Italiana Colore, of Konica-Minolta, of OIKOS and of other supporting companies, there are five scholarships, each worth 2.000 Euro. more
Shapes of Logic is the International Conference of Computational Design in Wroclaw, Poland May 26-28, 2017. The goal of this year's conference is to facilitate a discussion on the subjects of architecture, design and urban planning in the context of global technological progress. The main areas of interest will be robotics, digital fabrication, computation and broadly understood automation. Participant registration closes on March 13th. poster
Challenge Detroit's mission is to challenge leaders to learn by doing through a year of meaningful employment and intellectual work with area nonprofits designed to positively impact our diverse, culturally vibrant city.
