e-update #2

Dear readers,

Our 3 Lighthouse Cities, Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona, have been busy over the last few months as they prepare to roll out the 12 smart solutions and have been working hand-in-hand with industry partners and citizens to kick off this process. You can read more about this in their blogs, below.

We have also been actively involved in a number of events and launched our City Interest Group (CIG), at the Urban Futures Conference in Berlin which took place at the end of November.  If you, or any contacts, are interested in participating, please email Carsten at

Best wishes,

Gustaf Landahl
Project Coordinator (City of Stockholm)

Blog updates from the 3 Lighthouse Cities

Over the course of this five-year project, the Lighthouse Cities will provide regular updates on their progress, challenges and lessons learned in implementing the 12 solutions and transitioning to become a smart, sustainable city.

Stockholm blog #1: Back to the future
Almost one year ago work on the Stockholm site started in GrowSmarter. Looking back at this year it has been a trip back to the future.

We have started retrofitting 302 apartments in Valla Torg in Årsta
, looking how digitalisation fits into our city structure and our approach to becoming fossil free by 2040
Mika Hakosalo will be leading the implementation of the 12 solutions in Årsta, and will be providing you with updates from the Stockholm site.

Cologne blog #1: A blueprint for sustainable urban development
Over the last months we have seen the scaffolding go up in the Stegerwald settlement where we aim to  develop a blueprint for sustainable neighbourhoods to roll out in other parts of the city.

We have our data platform which is now in its first stages of being set up and our mobility hubs where we have run in to some issues…!

Barbara Moehlendick will be leading the implementation of the 12 solutions in Mülheim, and will be providing you with updates from the Cologne site.

Barcelona blog #1: Urban ontology for a smart city
Our contribution from Barcelona is going to be short but hopefully informative.

We focus mainly on the smart city data platform that we are developing, and the neighbourhood consultations we are carrying out.
Alex Serret Garrigues will be leading the implementation of the 12 solutions, and will be providing you with updates from the Barcelona site.
