Welcome 2016!

Sedona Red Rocks by Ivy Nowland Copyright Wings & Roots, LLC
And now we welcome the new year, Full of things than have never been.
~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Happy New Year and Welcome 2016 friends!  There is so much excitement and promise that comes with a new year.  We make resolutions, set intentions, make a commitment to make better choices, express more gratitude, live healthier, learn more about ourselves and create stronger relationships. I am finding on my own journey that getting to the why of things is key to lasting change and growth.  The why has been a common theme in many of the resources I have turned to in my research.  If you find you are struggling with feeling stuck, try breaking it down to the why.  Why do you want work out more, why do you want to start your own business, why do you want to eat healthier, why do you want to declutter, etc... and be really honest with yourself when answering the why.

What are your New Year Rituals?  We would love to hear from you and know what you are looking forward to this year.  Leave us a comment on Facebook or email us at  Wishing you many blessings in the 2016.

 ~ Ivy, Wings & Roots

Today is the last day of 2015 and as I get ready for 2016, it occurs to me that there is so much to be grateful for and I’m feeling pretty abundant! I’m spending the day making my Nana’s famous nut rolls and pizzelles for my cousin’s wedding in a couple of days. This typically would be Nana’s job, but sadly she can’t be here for the event, but her spirit sure will be.
That’s why I feel abundant…sure, I miss her a lot, but I have so much in my heart that she gave me. The love of cooking, family, music, and so much more. Today I smile as I imagine her standing next to me showing me how to roll the dough out just right for the nut rolls and not to leave the dough in the pizzelle iron too long. And I can’t wait to share that feeling with my cousin and the rest of my family as we celebrate her special day.
I encourage everyone to think about something in their lives that brings a feeling of abundance. It could be a special book you read with a loved one, or a favorite place filled with happy memories. This is the year, where my goal is to share the message of abundance with anyone interested in learning. If you’re interested or just curious, visit my facebook page Abbondanza here
. I’ll be sharing recipes and stories on how we can bring abundance more fully into our lives.
Holiday blessings and abundance to you and your special ones!

Pizzelle (pronounced like pizza, pizz-ella!)

1/2 cup shortening or softened butter
2/3 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 ¾ - 2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
1 pinch of salt
Other flavorings such as lemon, almond, anise
Mix ingredients together – makes a soft textured batter. Drop tablespoon full in the center of each section of the pizzelle iron and count to 10.

When the cookie is lightly golden, it’s ready. Place on a flat surface until cooled. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
 Edith’s Nut Rolls

4 ½ cups flour
5 egg yolks
3 packages dry yeast – add ¼ cup water and ½ tsp of sugar
1 cup of sour cream
2 sticks butter
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
Powdered sugar
Mix dry ingredients together. Put yeast in a small bowl with the water and sugar (above). In another bowl, beat the egg yolks, add the sour cream, then the softened butter. Mix the yeast with the wet mixture and add to the dry ingredients. Mix well and let rise in the refrigerator 2-4 hours. Split into 4 pieces and roll out each piece, spreading the nut filling (below) on the dough. Roll in powdered sugar and make a rolled loaf.
2 pounds of walnuts
5 egg whites
1 ½ cups sugar
Grind the nuts in a food processor. Whip the egg yolks like a meringue and add the sugar. Add the ground nuts to the sugar & meringue mixture. Spread evenly on the rolled dough using plenty of powdered sugar the same as you would flour.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes
Cool and wrap thoroughly in foil, and freeze in plastic bags. Nut rolls can be sliced frozen and served.

The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, 2010

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, a leading expert on shame, authenticity, and belonging, shares ten guideposts on the power of wholehearted living – a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.
Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we’d no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, “What if I can’t keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn’t everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?”

As we read and share together the ten guideposts to a wholehearted life, we’ll begin to explore how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, “No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough”.

Participants are responsible for supplying their own book.  Amazon currently has a kindle version for $7.46, Paperback for $8.66, Audio $9.99 here.
