“Bad libraries build collections. Good libraries build services.
Great libraries build communities."
― R. David Lankes
(scholar and library advocate)

YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!  We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who wrote, called, and showed up at the last Commission meeting to express their support of the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach. Your voices are being heard and the new budget proposal drastically reduces the impact to the library. WE ❤️ OUR COMMUNITY!

From Mayor Keith A. James September 1st newsletter:
Recently, some of you voiced concern about possible cuts to our valued library and parks programs. Thank you for speaking up. We listened and have responded accordingly. The proposed balanced budget does NOT include cuts disproportionately affecting the Mandel Public Library and the Department of Parks and Recreation. Our library and parks program cuts go toward part-time specialists and non-city employees, many of whom are currently not working due to the limitations of COVID-19.

As a reminder, budget discussions are NOT over as union negotiations continue, but we are optimistic that the library programs and staff will remain largely intact thanks to your amazing support.  Below are the final budget meeting dates to keep in mind:

September 10:

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office provided the WPB Library Foundation a grant from the State Law Enforcement Trust Fund approved by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commission in the amount of $25,000 to help fund our TEEN HOMEWORK CENTER, one of the most popular and vital programs for our community.

As part of this important program, teens can get FREE help with homework and other school projects from certified teachers. Students in grades 6 – 12 receive assistance with all subjects including homework projects, test prep, and even encouragement with their studies.

Teen Homework Center students Wendy Vail and Javontae Williams, along with our Library Foundation staff Nickie Hennevelt and Teen Librarian Sophie Meridien, wanted to give a big THANK YOU to the PBSO - Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office!

WPTV recently aired a story featuring career advice from the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach's career coach KATHY SHABOTYNSKYJ.  Kathy discusses some tips for job seekers and taking advantage of free career help available to make sure they are ready for their next career move.  You can sign up for an appointment with Kathy for resume and job help through the library on its Job Help page.

Watch the video HERE.

The Library continues to offer a number of virtual programs to help our community with reemployment efforts during this time including Resume & Career Help by phone or email, Job Help Quick Tips videos, along with Zoom programs like Writing a Great Resume, Online Interview Made Easy, and a Get That Job Workshop.  The Library's job help services are vital and valuable for our community members.  With your generous support, the West Palm Beach Library Foundation is able to help fund these life-changing programs.

Do you want to help our local students while staying at home?  The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach has got the opportunity for you! Volunteers are needed for the library's LET'S READ program that brings storytime into Title I pre-schools and elementary schools in WPB.  Typically volunteers would read aloud to students in the classroom, however this year volunteers will be reading virtually on the Google Meet platform.
