“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination.
They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life."
― Sidney Sheldon
(American writer and producer)

At the last City Commission meeting on Aug. 10, the City of West Palm Beach  proposed that that the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach make a 33.4% cut to its FY20-21 budget, the highest percentage in reduction of any City department, eliminating 12.5 full-time employees and 12 on-call positions.and cutting vital community programs and resources.

Thanks in large part to the significant community response to this issue, this week, during the Mayor/Commission Budget Workshop, the City Administrator offered an “Option B” to make up for the City's $10M budget shortfall.  Option B provides for even 5% cuts across all City departments, except fire and police, rather than the disproportionate cut to the library previously proposed.

Our work is not done until the budget is approved!  Option A is still on the table and there is likely an Option C forthcoming.  You can still support YOUR City Library and its dedicated staff by contacting the Mayor, City Administrators, and all the City Commissioners and encouraging them not to cut these valuable positions and programs. The City will present the FY21 proposed budget at the August 24th City Commission meeting.

The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach helps over 760,000 people each year!  The past few months have proven that the Library is more important than ever, providing critical resources, programs and services to our community.  Our dedicated librarians have adapted and worked to help and inspire patrons during the coronavirus pandemic with essential virtual programs like tutoring, job help, and more.  Library services are an essential part of a robust recovery!
Meet Allison and Aidan Taylor, siblings who recently used the career coaching services at the Mandel Public Library.  WPTV NewsChannel 5 featured a story about the Library's career coaching and other job help programs.  The Library continues to offer a number of virtual programs to help our community with reemployment efforts during this time including Resume & Career Help by phone or email, Job Help Quick Tips videos, along with Zoom programs like Writing a Great Resume, Online Interview Made Easy, and a Get That Job Workshop.

The Library's job help services are vital and valuable for our community members.  With your generous support, the West Palm Beach Library Foundation is able to help fund these life-changing programs.

While the start of school may be different this year for many students, the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach wants to help students maintain academic success.  Thanks in part to your generous contributions, kids and teens have access to a variety of free library programs and resources to help them learn and stay engaged including Virtual Homework Help, a vast Digital Library, and Virtual After-School Activities.  In addition, to help parents and students start off the year, the library will be providing FREE Goodie Bags of School Supplies available for contactless pickup (while supplies last).
Because the Homework Centers have become a learning staple for many local students and one of the Mandel Public Library’s most popular programs, the teachers and librarians developed a way to offer the much-needed help virtually. Elementary, middle and high school students can receive help with all subjects, projects, test prep, and even encouragement with their studies from certified teachers on the Google Meet platform.

Many of the library’s student programs are funded by the West Palm Beach Library Foundation.  The Foundation raises funds for the Mandel Public Library to provide quality programs, services, and resources that enrich and strengthen its diverse community.  To donate to the foundation and help support after-school programs for local students, visit or call 561-868-7793.

Our beloved Dog Tales furry friend Kermit has passedKermit was the black and white Landseer Newfoundland dog that you see at the top of our newsletter every month.  You may have also seen this lovable creature around our KidSpace Area.  Kermit was one of the outstanding therapy dogs in the Mandel Public Library's Dog Tales program who visited a few times each week to have kids read aloud to him. The popular program helps young readers improve their literacy skills by allowing them to practice their reading out loud without judgement and become more confident readers. Some of the kids even overcome their fear of dogs because Kermit was such a gentle giant.

Kermit helped so many local young readers in our community and we know he will be missed by staff and patrons alike. We are sending our sincerest condolences to his favorite human Bonnie, his best bud Fozzie Bear, and his sister Prairie Dawn.

If you didn't get a chance to meet Kermit, he led a very interesting life...he was a therapy dog, service dog, show dog, acting and modeling dog, and more.  Learn more about Kermit here:
