July News

“Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by
the individual who can labor in freedom."
― Albert Einstein

The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.began a contactless walk-up pickup service on Monday, June 29, 2020.  The new service allows patrons to pick up physical library materials Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until further notice.  The Mandel Public Library is committed to providing safe access to the tens of thousands of physical materials through this new walk-up pickup service, in addition to the expanded access to online resources it has been offering since March.
While the library doors remain currently closed, patrons have been enjoying hundreds of virtual programs on the library’s social media pages and its digital library.  However, patrons also have been requesting materials housed in the downtown building so the library staff developed a safe, viable solution.

Safety protocols are in place for this new pickup system, and library staff will always follow strict guidelines when handling library materials by wearing gloves and masks. In addition, all physical materials will be disinfected and placed in quarantine for 48 hours prior to being checked out to the next patron. Patrons will not be in direct contact with any library staff.
The library has begun taking holds on material via phone and email. There is no limit to the amount of materials requested, and library staff will pull as many available items as requested for checkout.  All checkout policies remain the same (three weeks for books, two weeks for express books and magazines, and one week for CDs and DVDs), with all eligible items automatically renewing.

We have some BIG NEWS: The City of West Palm Beach has appointed
Lisa Hathaway as the new Library Director of the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.

Many of you already know this superstar as Lisa has been with the Library since 2004. She was hired as the Children’s Librarian, promoted to Library Manager, as has been Assistant Library Director for the past 12 years.

“I am honored to continue to be a part of this great library and city in my new role as Library Director,” said Lisa Hathaway. “I look forward to moving this library, with a team of very dedicated staff, in a direction that is reflective of the needs and interests of our diverse West Palm Beach community.”

We couldn't be more thrilled to share the news of this well-deserved appointment and to be working alongside this dedicated and talented woman.

Jennifer McQuown, Youth Services Manager at the Mandel Public Library of WPB, has been named the 2020 winner of ALA’s Scholastic Library Publishing Award.

The award, supported by the Scholastic Publishing Company, recognizes a librarian whose unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people, exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession. Jennifer is being honored for her outstanding contributions to the field of literacy. She is a passionate advocate of reading and believes in getting books into the hands of every child and teenager, and has worked tirelessly to develop programs and partnerships for children and teens through her library and the community.
