The Bennington Bookshop      March 2015

 Vermont's oldest independent bookstore

New Owners for Bennington Bookshop

We (Linda Foulsham and Phil Lewis) recently purchased the Bennington Bookshop from long-time owners, Rick and Ellen Havlak. We had been looking for a suitable location to open a bookstore where we live in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina. However, we were unable to find an appropriate space and decided to look elsewhere. The sale of Bennington Bookshop was advertised through the American Booksellers Association and, after visits to Bennington in August and September, and meetings with the Havlaks, we decided to go ahead with the purchase.

We have been thrilled by the welcome the local community has extended to us. People have been dropping in every day to wish us the best. There have been flowers, and kind notes, and friendly smiles. It has been a very exciting start to our new adventure.
We have no big plans for change in the near future, but have made a few small adjustments to the bookshop, shifting a couple of categories here and there. We also plan to have a greater online presence, and will be launching a website in the near future. We intend to publish this newsletter on a monthly basis.
The newsletter will feature bookshop news, new releases, staff recommendations and more.

Three "generations" of Bennington Bookshop
Three "generations" of owners of the Bennington Bookshop recently gathered at the store for a grand Farewell and Welcome Party. The farewell was for Rick and Ellen Havlak who recently sold the store to Linda Foulsham and Phil Lewis.

Jay and Joan Zwynenburg, pictured above, sold the bookstore to Rick and Ellen in 1979. A big thank you to Rick and Ellen for all their help and support during our transition. Thanks, too, for organizing the party. And thanks to everyone who came! And to all those people who dropped in through the week to say hello and wish us the best.
Book of the Month
A.J. Fikry owns and runs a small independent bookstore on an island off the coast of New England. Things are not going well for AJ or the store: He has lost his wife Nic, the love of his life; his most valuable book has also gone missing; and sales are at an all-time low. The discovery of an unusual package left in the bookstore opens a new chapter in AJ's life. He learns to live again, to love, and to celebrate life and the people in it.
This is a delightful book, warm and endearing. Thoughtful, too. I read it in one sitting and didn't want it to end. Phil

Author-signed copies
Local author Megan Bergman recently came by the store to sign a number of copies of her latest best-selling book, Almost Famous Women, and her earlier book, Birds of a Lesser Paradise. Almost Famous Women is a collection of stories about women throughout history. Bergman highlights a dimension of the lives of each of her characters, one that was not a focus in their history, bringing the characters to life and celebrating their creativity and bravery.
We also have signed copies of Archer Mayor's latest Joe Gunther mystery,
Proof Positive.
