Job Verdonschot receives Kootstra Talent Fellowship

During the second round of the Kootstra Talent Fellowships 2015, Job Verdonschot (PI Stephane Heymans) was granted a fellowship. The Kootstra Talent Fellowships are granted to young scientific talents by the Board of Maastricht UMC+ with the aim to support developing their scientific career.

EU Horizon 2020 project Robert van Oostenbrugge and Julia Staals funded

Project of which Robert van Oostenbrugge and Julie Staals (Dept. of Neurology) are collaborators funded by EU-HORIZON 2020. Both are part of a consortium led by the Ludwig Maximilian Universiy in Munich that applied for funding of their project “SVDs@target (SVDs-at-target) – cerebral small vessel diseases in a mechanistic perspective: Targets for Intervention”

Cerebral small vessel diseases (SVDs) are a major cause of stroke and dementia, and yet there is no targeted treatment. Progress in understanding the mechanisms that drive microvascular dysfunction and brain damage in SVDs has been elusive, until now. SVDs@target proposes a coordinated programme to elucidate key mechanisms common to different SVDs, and determine how these mechanisms contribute to individual SVDs. The overall aim is to identify novel targets for prevention and therapy where none currently exist.

At CARIM clinical, studies with patients with manifest cerebral small vessel disease as well as animal studies into the role of inflammation in the development and progression of cerebral small vessel disease are performed.
Who's new?!

My name is Ying Xin, born in Henan, China. I received my master’s degree in Internal Medicine from Zhengzhou University in Jul 2015. In the past 3 years, my study project mainly focused on obesity and osteoporosis. Since October this year, I have started as a PhD student at Maastricht University at the department of Internal medicine under the supervision of Prof. Schalkwijk, Prof. Stehouwer and Dr. van Greevenbroek. My 4 years’ PhD research will focus on exploring the relationship between the complement system and T2DM and will include both epidemiological and laboratory work. I am glad to begin a new life and study here.

My name is Rob Holtackers. I received my master's degree in Medical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology in Oct 2015. In the past 2 years, my study projects mainly focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In Aug 2014, I started my master thesis on the assessment of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries by using MRI at the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC). Last summer, I did an internship at the Imaging Sciences Division of King's College London, where I worked on black-blood techniques for late gadolinium enhanced MRI of myocardial scar. Since November 2015, I have started as a PhD student at the department of Radiology of the MUMC under supervision of Prof. Wildberger and Dr Kooi. My 3 years' PhD research will mainly focus on further assessment of the deformation and composition of atherosclerotic plaques in both carotid and coronary arteries by using both MRI and hybrid PET-MRI.
