Leducq

Transatlantic

network Judith Sluimer

The Leducq Foundation has awarded 6 million US dollar for a transatlantic network of excellence entitled “Modulating autophagy to treat cardiovascular disease”. Dr Judith Sluimer (Department of Pathology) is one of eight  European and American core members, including world-class investigators Dr Beth Levine, Dr Ana Maria Cuervo and Dr Guido Kroemer. Autophagy is an intracellular process to recycle nutrients and macromolecules. The goal of this network is to delineate the role and therapeutic potential to modulate macroautophagy, mitophagy and chaperone-mediated autophagy in cardiovascular disease. Judith will receive 350.000$ to study autophagy in atherosclerosis.

Furthermore, ZonMw has awarded Dr Judith Sluimer 5.570€ in the framework of the program `Meer kennis met midner dieren (more knowledge using less animals). The goal of this program is to stimulate open-access publication of negative or neutral animal experiments.

Who's new?!

My name is Suzanne Zwaveling and I recently started as a PhD student at the Department of Biochemistry.  After my graduation in Medicine at Maastricht University I worked as a resident internal medicine in Eindhoven and abroad in Curacao.  During my time in the clinic I’ve learned many things about what we do know in medicine but also, equally important, it gave me insight in things we do not know in medicine. Under the supervision of Prof. Ten Cate I’ll be doing research in order to improve the safety of anticoagulant therapy, with special interest in the NOAC’s.

My name is Stepan Denisov. I earned MSc in Chemistry at the Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2013. My current research is focused on studying heteromolecular chemokines interactions with tick proteins - Evasins.

My name is Mindy, I am 28 years old and studied medicine at the Maastricht University. I worked at the cardiothoracic surgery department in Eindhoven for 1.5 years, after which I decided to switch to cardiology. After working for more than a half year, I started in March with my PhD track on hybrid atrial fibrillation ablations, which perfectly fits with my interests in cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology. I am looking forward to a pleasant cooperation with Prof. Crijns and Dr Pison and hope that our studies will have good results in favor of the hybrid ablation.
