Welcome to the Dog Days of August!
            I know most of you enjoy living in the Puget Sound because we don’t “normally” get all this excessive heat, but even with that, don’t you just feel invigorated when you wake up to sunshine?  I hope so—it certainly does that for me.
            First, let me start by sharing my gratitude for our wonderful members.  Thank you to Lizbeth Doving, Ingunn Kuester, Karen Zabinski, Paul Anunson, Kim & Chris Cannon, Paul Nicholson, Ellen Sletten, Scott & Keri Krankowski and all the rest of our members who have stepped up to provide so many yummy Friday night dinners as well as food for special events here at the lodge.  (I apologize to all those volunteers I have not named here.  Please know you are appreciated)  We just initiated a Food Services Committee to help us become more organized and Karen Zabinski, Debbie Goyette and Lorena Maxwell have graciously agreed to head this committee.  Thank you to our Building Association and the nine directors who so diligently care for our building.  Thank you to our Bar Manager and our bartenders who make meeting in the Trolls’ Den to share a drink or two such a fun time.  Thank you to our Trolls’ Den Advisory Committee, Library Committee, Scholarship Committee, Pricing Committee, our Gambling Manager and everyone else who has accepted appointments to ensure that all areas of our lodge run smoothly.  Thank you to our Ladies Club for funding the repair of our kitchen ovens and grills as well as the new dishes, silverware, and dessert cups. Thank you to the Lodge Update Committee (LUC) who continue to move forward with their plans to revitalize all areas of our lodge.  And most of all, thank you to all our members who continue to support the lodge through donations, volunteering, and joining in and volunteering for the scheduled events such as our Friday night dinners, Poulsbo Historical Society codfish dinner, and Kubb Tournament.
            I just completed the required mid-year report to the membership and you will find a link to that in this newsletter.  I hope you will each take the time to read the report so you will be aware of all that has been going on here at your lodge.  I won’t repeat all that information here but a few highlights include:  a) we now have a full complement of employees with Bar Manager Koleen Baker, Financial Clerk Susan Wytko, Venue Rental Coordinator Alisha Anunson, Office Manager Christina Webster and our five  part time bartenders; b) We have accepted 116 new members into the lodge so far in 2021; c) we have converted to a new Chart of Accounts and QuickBooks 2021 which should provide clearer financial reports; and d) the new Trolls’ Den door access initiated in February has been very successful.
            Looking forward to the last half of 2021, many of our groups, such as the Alive Church and Rotary, have returned and others, such as our dancers and Daughters of Norway, plan on coming back in September.  Even more exciting, we are receiving many inquiries regarding rentals through this year and into 2022.  We anticipate that the lodge will be very busy and we hope that all our members will volunteer to help in some way as we move forward.  As the old song of 1966 says, “See you in September!”

Mid Year Report
YOU ARE NEEDED!!  Please consider being on the Nominating Committee to select our slate of officers for 2022.  If you are interested, call the office at 360-779-5209 and gve Christina your name and contact information.  The Nominating Committee will be appointed by September.  Along with that, please consider serving on the board.  There are many positions available and you will find it very gratifying to help your lodge move forward.

Heritage Camp 2021 was a huge success. We cooked delicious food, played Kubb, visited fantastic museums, learned fun dances, did some amazing crafts and learned all about Antarctic exploration!

RENEW TODAY:  Volunteers needed moving forward.  Many Food Handler Permits have expired or will be expiring in the next few weeks and months.  Please check your card and renew your permit to work with food as we will be needing more and more volunteers.  If you renew before your card expires, it will be good for 3 years.  If you wait until your card has already expired, the new card will only be good for 2 years.
 
Looking for members to prepare meals for Friday night dinners at the lodge. Meals are great fundraisers and allow fellow members to enjoy time together. Instructions and training provided. Please contact Paul Anunson 360-271-7298 of you are interested.

NEW TAX
As some of you already know, a new payroll tax will be implemented
1/1/22.  This is the WA Cares Fund, HB 1087.  This program is funded by a mandatory payroll tax of 0.58% initially.  It is the nation's first public state-operated long term care insurance program.  The benefits are $100 per day for qualified Long Term Care with a lifetime limit of $36,500.  Benefits will  not be available until January 1, 2025, but the tax will be collected starting January 1, 2022.

Employees are able to opt out of the program if they have other approved insurance.  There are several good alternatives, but a privately owned insurance must be in place before November 1, 2021.  An employee wishing to opt out must apply with the Employment Security Department between October 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022.  If the employee does not have an approved policy before November of this year, they cannot opt out.  
I have more complete information on this program and can inform you about alternatives.  There are several restrictions to receiving benefits that do not exist under privately owned policies.
