Poulsbo Sons of Norway 2-44 - President's Message
Happy Easter Everyone or as we’d say if we were in Norway, God påske ,
Did you know that, despite being known as a predominantly secular country, Easter is an important holiday in Norway.  Paaske is welcomed as a chance to celebrate the arrival of spring and to enjoy a lengthy break from work and school.  I say “lengthy” because Norway has the world’s longest Easter holiday.  Shops and workplaces are closed over Maundy Thursday (skjaertorsdag), Good Friday (langfredag), Easter (paaske), and the Monday after Easter (andre paaskedag)  and schools are closed for the entire week.  During this long holiday, people would be eating Easter lamb, getting an Easter tan while skiing in the Easter mountains, giving gifts of giant cardboard Easter eggs filled with candy, and reading Easter crime novels such as those written by their own internationally known author, Jo
Here in Poulsbo we also look forward to Easter.  Now moving into Phase 3, we hope to start learning what our new normal will be.  As a start, our own Vikings are going to continue their tradition of giving out Easter eggs on April 3rd.—but in the Covid style this year.  So watch for more information on that.
I must send out a tremendous THANK YOU to Ruby Patterson and all of her many volunteers.  What a wonderfully scrumptious Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner she and Arne and all the helpers brought to the lodge in memory of her wonderful Mike on March 12th.  Everyone was having fun and it was so great to see the lodge begin to breathe again!
Moving along into spring, even though we won’t know the fate of this year’s Viking Fest until April 1st, we here at the lodge are going to celebrate Syttende Mai with a special vendor event plus Norwegian treats and a beer garden.  This is going to happen on Saturday, May 15th.  We will need many volunteers to make this celebration successful and we look forward to joining with our members to enjoy a very special day.  With Covid still an issue, it takes even more volunteers to ensure we follow all the requirements and social distancing to keep everyone safe.  So, if you are available the week of May 9th to help get things ready, please contact the lodge office to let us know you’d like to volunteer.  For those of you who won’t be able to volunteer, save the date on your calendar and come on down to the lodge on May 15th to enjoy celebrating with friends. Remember, it’s a New Dawn, a New Day, a New Life--starting today!
Fred være med deg til neste måned

Ruby's Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner, dedicated to Mike Patterson, was a wild success!  Thank you to the volunteers who helped make this possible, and especially to Ruby, who not only put in countless hours, but also funded the meal.  Cupcakes were hand made and donated by Kim Cannon, and Bill Kraus was our bagpipe entertainment. An added surprise was Bjørn Nilsen's Blåbær Bløtkaker, made by Bjørn for Torbjorg to celebrate his mother's 86th birthday!  Many were lucky to have a slice of this classic Norwegian cake.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone:

Next time you stroll down Front Street, take a gander at how lovely our garden bed is filling out. The bed was created a few years ago by Judy Morgan, using 2015 & 2019 grants from the Poulsbo Garden Club. Would you like to donate compost? Perhaps you have a few 5gal buckets surplus from your own delivery! Contact us re compost or to join our quarterly garden clean up crew. No experience necessary.

Building Association Workshop
The building association is ready to fully open and support the lodge in providing a place to celebrate Norwegian culture and heritage. As things open up in the area due to COVID restrictions, room rentals will resume, groups will gather, and members can socialize more and more.
We on the Building Association board of directors have been taking this “down” time to assess the status of the building to what is needed to fully open up in the coming months, including how to improve.  Some of the systems in the lodge are dated and need much maintenance.  In the near future we may need to update some of the features to keep as reliable and energy efficient here at the lodge.  Please consider what you may do to help in this way should it be needed.
Many thanks to the Lodge Update Committee (LUC) as they have freshened up, organized and overall improved the use of this building for its members.  They have done great work and I hope that you agree.
If there was an employee of the month, it would go to Roger Swenson of the Building Association.  Being on the board since 2017, he has been instrumental in the installation and programming of the new Trolls’ Den member access door this past month. Also, when the heat failed in the lodge just recently he was able to diagnose and replace a sensor that had gone bad, making the lodge more comfortable for our members.  When the Trolls’ Den glass washer started to leak he lead the effort to repair and recalibrate the washer back to normal again. He continues to be an excellent resource to the board and members of this lodge with his know how of the systems in the building.  Thank you Roger, it is a pleasure working with you.
Thanks go to the members who have helped with the upkeep of the lodge during the COVID restrictions so that we remain a vital part of the downtown Poulsbo area.  We still look great!  And if you have a special skill you’d like to share with us, please let me know!
