Coming Events

Join us Monday, June 13, for the Leikarringen End of Year Perfomance. 6:00pm in the Marine Room.  Everyone is Invited.
Join us as we learn more about the history of Poulsbo at this informative presentation by Judy Driscoll of the Poulsbo Historical Society.
Midtsommer ("Mid-summer") has an important place in Norwegian history and culture as the longest day of the year because over most of the country it never gets dark. This presents a prime opportunity for barbecues, bonfires, and parties into the wee hours. The key is really the bonfires, which are family, neighborhood, or sometimes civic events built to be as big as possible, sometimes multiple stories tall. The largest may even be moved out onto a barge in the fjord for ideal viewing.

The actual holiday of midtsommer is Sankthansaften (sahnkt-hahns-awf-tuhn, "Saint John's Eve"), celebrated on the night of June 23. John the Baptist's birthday is purported to be June 24 (six months before Jesus') which is a day of feasting.

A more Swedish celebration is the raising of the midsommarstång, or maypole, decorated with leaves and flowers to celebrate the green season after a dark, cold winter. As the story goes, Scandinavians have to raise their maypoles in June because spring greenery comes so much later!

Fortunately for us, Midtsommer at the lodge has the best of everything with the maypole, bonfire, Nordic Market, and Taste of Norway treats for everyone (details in fliers nearby). Since we don't get the 23rd off, we've conveniently moved the festivities to Saturday the 18th. See you there!
