Joe and Guin Miller
Welcome to this third newsletter in our series honoring the illuminating murshids and mentors whose lives and teachings give inspiration, hope and guidance to the leaders of and participants in the Dances of Universal Peace.

We hope you peruse the links in this newsletter to gain more insight and encouragement from the sharp wit and broad horizons of Joe Miller, who constantly strove to cultivate the seeds of pure wisdom in the hearts of all of his students.
"Each one of you have multitudinous answers to every question. All the books you see on the walls around you don’t carry one-hundredth part of THAT which is in the depth of your own being. But don’t think you’re going to get it by just controlling your sex force and becoming bramacharya. I’m sure that nine out of ten people here have gone through that experience in other lives. Now you can bring the essence of what you have found there and realize it here in the midst of this circumstance.

A Man Connected to the Divine
by Jane Sky

“Common sense, a sense of humor and more common sense.” That’s Joe Miller in a nutshell. Also, according to him, these three things are what one needs for the spiritual path.

Born in 1904, growing up poor in rural northern Minnesota, Joe lived  through most of the 20th century with all its anguish, upheavals, transformations, and he was one of the light bearers who helped to usher in the new age.

Drawn to spiritual pursuits and mysticism as a young man, he experienced and explored many paths, teachers, studies and philosophies. He found a deep connection with the Theosophists, celebrating their open-mindedness and their focus on truth in all its unadorned simplicity. It was at the Theosophical Society that he met Samuel Lewis and forged a lifelong friendship based on mutual understanding and respect. On his deathbed, Murshid Sam asked Joe to “take care of my kids." And for twenty years Joe did that, a constant source of love, joy, light, truth and guidance.

Joe described himself as “a graduate of the school of hard knocks.” He distilled vital wisdom from his life lessons and called the challenges he faced “the manure that makes the flowers grow.” Those flowers were in full bloom by the late sixties and for two more decades. He lived in San Francisco with his beloved wife Guin and in a straightforward way - sometimes playful, sometimes intense, but always with gusto - taught the pure truth, the heart path, the path of unconditional love. He would take no titles, nor any money for his efforts.

Many people would seek him out and he taught classes every day. He led walks in Golden Gate Park weekly and would sometimes have hundreds of people walking with him. He had a Rumi-like quality of being completely in the present moment, receiving and translating prose of multi-layered beauty and mysticism. One of his students shared with me this advice Joe gave him about solving a difficult problem. Joe told him, “stand over it like it’s a cup of tea and look at it from every side, and then give it up to spirit.” He advised that the answers would come spontaneously if we can avoid having fixed ideas and let ourselves be unconstrained by the habits of the self. He used a saying from his days as a performer in vaudeville: “Take it from the slap.”

Joe, like Murshid Sam, was a genuine American mystic. He loved the American spirit of independence, the “can-do” attitude. He saw America as a “great experiment, completely inclusive, where everyone can find a place.” Joe  reminded his students constantly that we are eternal beings, the potential for enlightenment exists within us always, and in any moment we can “fall awake.”

“May all beings be well, may all beings be happy, peace, peace, peace.“ Think of Joe when you sing this beloved song, for he and Guin wrote it, as well as dozens of others that are uplifting and beautiful paeans to the Divine Oneness. Through his own connection to the Divine, he was able to be a source of encouragement, strength and guidance for many people, a kind and blessed friend and wayshower.

Haiku

We did not receive any haiku for this month's theme. However, we did receive a lovely surprise in the mail! Thank you to Mike Muraq’abba Monahan (Farmington, ME) for sending us a beautiful hand-calligraphied booklet filled with the following haiku from the 2008 Northeast Sufi Camp. These selected haiku were the result of a walking meditation practice led by Halima and Abraham with the instruction of "Take a walk in the woods and come back with a haiku...."

I push my prayer beads
one by one I kiss the last
now my life begins
~ Farid

What does the wind say?
High, high the trees and the sky
And on the ground, mud.
~Mary

Glimmering spider’s web
sanctuary berries!
following the path.
~Zakira

The wind is blowing
clouds yield
to pure rainbow light
true nature revealed
~Halima

Parallel branches
lie patiently among the dead
sprouting bright mushrooms
~Deidre

Let the flowing come
prolifering within
embrace it here, now

~Habiba

Next month's theme is Hazrat Inayat Khan. Please send your haiku to dupnamail@gmail.com

"Live for yourself!  Why not?  Even an old fossil like me, with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.  I'm enjoying my life.  And after the things I've seen....Well, I've seen it all.  I like it and I'm going to take the trip again.  In fact, as soon as I can get it, I'll take it when I get there.  I got friends here and I'm going to keep on seeing them.  I'll be there.  This is not just for this time, this is a proposition that you signed for all eternity and well on into Eternity, breathe, live a little of the other part!"

"Maybe I scare people, maybe I’m a little nuts.
I’ve been called a Madzub. But a Madzub isn’t as nuts as people think because he is hearing that eternal and internal music all the time.
It’s an ecstasy! There is a great song, a great music happening in life at all times.
So be the true note you are.”
