New Course for Spring 2023
Simulation Theory: Technology,
Sci-Fi, Religion, and Philosophy

Who: All Who are Interested in Technology and Its Future Impact on Society

What: Simulation Theory (FSE 494, FSE 598, FIS 494, HSD 598) will be taught by Rizwan Virk, author of the bestselling book, The Simulation Hypothesis. Today as the idea of virtual environments gains popularity through video games, virtual reality, Artificial Intelligence, and the Metaverse, it’s natural to speculate about where it will all end up. The newly emerging field of simulation theory explores an idea that is being articulated by scientists, philosophers, theologists, and more: that we live inside a simulated reality. Topics covered include the modern simulation argument, representations of virtual worlds in science fiction, the evolution and future of video games, the Metaverse and AI, and the intersection of simulation theory with western and eastern religions, as well as western philosophical ideas about the nature of reality.

When + Where: Tuesdays from 12 to 1:15 pm, on the Tempe Campus or Online via Zoom

Who: All of ASU's Top Innovators and Entrepreneurs interested in social change.

What: The Global Engagement Summit (GES), is an annual three-day student-run conference held at Northwestern University that brings together young entrepreneurs from around the world who are interested in social change. Through GES, students can share challenging ideas, explore the realms of social entrepreneurship and community development and equip themselves with the tools needed to take their social ventures beyond good intentions.

Apply to Venture Devils & Turn Your Idea Into Reality

Who: All ASU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community entrepreneurs affiliated with ASU are encouraged to apply.

What: Venture Devils empowers the entrepreneurial success of founders by connecting them with Venture Mentors who provide personalized support. Accepted founders also receive direct access to ASU seed funding opportunities, training and development offerings, and venture development spaces.

When + Where: The Venture Devils program operates year-round on all campuses and online. The application deadline is Monday, January 2, 2023 at 11:59 PM

Why: ASU-affiliated entrepreneurs who apply now will be eligible to compete in the Spring 2023 Demo Day to vie for their share of over $200,000 in available seed grant funding.

NSF Innovation Corps Team Info Session

Who: All of ASU's top innovators and entrepreneurs.

What: The U.S. Nation Science Foundation (NSF) is hosting an information session on the Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Teams. The I-Corps Teams Curriculum provide real-world, hands-on immersive learning to teach innovators and entrepreneurs what they need to evaluate commercial opportunity around innovation. The webinar will cover more details about the program followed by a Q&A.

When: Thursday, 1/5/2023 from 12-1 PM EST (10 - 11 AM Arizona)

Where: Online via Zoom, register for the link.

Why: This program is a great opportunity to learn how to evaluate the market opportunity and pitch your venture to over 100 potential customers, partners, or other stakeholders.

Info Session on Opportunities with the Department of the Air Force

Who: All of ASU's Top Small Businesses and Early-Stage Ventures.

What: ASU and the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) are collaborating with the Academic Partnership Engagement Experiment (APEX) to provide information and support in accessing opportunities offered by the Department of the Air Force (DAF) SBIR/STTR program. APEX is a unique program that aims to enhance partnerships between DAF and academia to support the U.S. Air Forces Science and Technology 2030 Strategy. APEX will host an information session on the program followed by a Q&A afterward.

When: Friday, 1/6/2023 at 2 PM MST

Why: The DAF SBIR/STTR program, presents a significant early-stage funding opportunity to founders that create products or services that can solve problems for the Air Force.

Hosting ASUio Visiting Venture Founder Finalists

Who: All ASU student entrepreneurs who may be willing to host our visiting ASUio semi-finalist venture founders in their apartments or homes are eligible to opt in. To be eligible to host visiting founders, you must have available sleeping space in the form of beds, couches, or air mattresses. Guests must also have access to a full bathroom with a shower during their stay. Hosts are not required to provide food or transportation.

What: We are actively seeking student founders who are interested in hosting visiting tech startup founders during the ASU Innovation Open (ASUio) finals in February 2023.

When: Visiting founder hosting would be between Thursday, February 9^th, through Sunday, February 12^th.
Host Declaration Deadline: Sunday, January 8, 2023

Where: You would do the hosting in your own apartment or home. Selected hosts will also be invited to all ASUio VIP events (e.g., semi-finalist networking mixers, meals, outings, etc.) throughout the competition proceedings (TBA).

Why: This is a great way to meet student founders from other schools across the nation - and across the globe!

Next Steps: An ASUio staff member will contact all potential hosts for additional details and coordination.

What: It is a track of crash courses in Social Entrepreneurship with hands-on incubator-style classes in partnership with tech companies, like Intel and NXP. During the semester, we run 12 fantastic labs with industry experts, professionals, faculty, and mentors that will advance your social or sustainable startup or community project. At the end of the courses, the final pitch presentations compete for eSeed grant Social Impact Challenge Funding from Tom Prescott Student Venture Fund.

Courses:
TEM 450 Design for Developing World + TEM 498 Capstone Project
This course is focused on tangible products for social and sustainable needs. Ventures focus on B2C models, such as design for extreme affordability, prosthetics, personal mobility, child safety, and more. The students advance the work on their own venture, or students can work on a problem-solution challenge that a non-profit faces.
When + Where: Poly Campus, Fridays, 8:30 am - 12:00 pm.

TEM 598 Systemic Design and Social Innovation + TEM 494
It is focused on intangible products/services, informational and platform-based business models, and software-as-a-service (SaaS). It deals with social and sustainable complex and systemic issues. Ventures focus on B2B public/private models at the national and international levels, including complex stakeholder networks of policymakers, NGOs, and private enterprises. Discusses ethics of technology and human-technology interaction. The students advance the work on their ventures.
When + Where: Tempe @ Novus, Thursdays, 9:30 am -12:00 pm.

The New Venture Challenge

Who: All ASU Students, Staff, & Faculty who are seeking Venture Capital Investment for a new business.

What: The New Venture Challenge is an 8-week Spring-semester course, taught by 8-time entrepreneur and current investor Scott Wald. The course helps students to think through their business from value proposition, to financial modeling, and investor ‘pitching’ – and the classes culminate in participants competing for an unfair share of $50,000 in available SAFE note investment. Please reach out to jsbyrne2@asu.edu for more information.

When: Applications for access to the class are accepted on a rolling basis – so fill out the attached form and apply NOW.

Why: Participants gain unprecedented access to a series of curated investment mentors, and graduate-level business designers, to help them create a viable business around their new innovations.

Apply to Compete in the Rice Business Plan Competition

Who: All of ASU's Top Innovators and Entrepreneurs.

What: The Rice Business Plan Competition (RBCP) showcases the best university startups from all across the U.S. and the World. This competition provides student entrepreneurs the experience of pitching their venture and learning what it takes to build and launch a successful business. Students will compete to find investors and win their share in over $1+ million in prizes. The RBPC is looking for teams with at least two current student founders pursuing a graduate degree (MA, Ph.D., etc.) and fall into one of the following 5 sectors: Energy, Cleantech & Sustainability, Life Science & Healthcare Solutions, Hard Tech, Digital Enterprise, or Consumer Products & Services.

When: Info Session: 1/11/2023 at 3 PM Arizona Time (4 PM CT)
Application Deadline: 2/28/2023
Competition: 5/11-13/2023

Why: RBPC allows your venture to gain real-world experience, receive mentorship, feedback, and guidance from investors and entrepreneurs, and network with other founders.

ASU Tech Startup Happy Hour
Powered by ASU E+I @ Fulton, Hool Coury Law, and the Fulton Faculty Founders Squad (3FS)

Who: ASU’s top and aspiring tech venture founders, including faculty spinout founders, and management team members are invited. The event will feature an informal round of introductions (or lightning venture pitches) by all in attendance.

What: E+I @ Fulton Startup Happy Hour powered by Hool Coury Law, is a monthly networking opportunity for all ages. Complimentary appetizers and soft drinks will be provided, and a hosted bar will be available to all innovators over 21.

When: Friday, January 13, 2023; 3-5 pm
