ASU Startup 33 Buckets is Providing Clean Water for Peruvians
33 Buckets is a non-profit that partners with rural communities in Peru to help address and design custom plans for access to clean water. 33 Buckets was founded In 2015 by three then-ASU students: Mark Huerta, Swaroon Sridhar, and Paul Strong. Today the nonprofit is directed by a different mix of alums with the help of ASU students and Engineering Projects in Community Service to continue their mission.
Erin Burgard, now an environmental engineering junior at Barrett was on the ground in Cusco Peru, working with the community to develop an aquaculture project. During her internship, she worked with the community to not only design clean water but also ensure that it could be maintained over time. Current director, Daniel Hoop has been involved with 33 Buckets since 2017 and continues to help lead the team as they approach this human center design challenge. Adam Westmoreland, a chemical engineer was tasked with prototyping a new water treatment system while in Peru with Hoop. Risa Fish was focused on managing social media and interviewing the people in the community to share their stories. Fish says that process gave her a chance to understand the mission better. “I needed to use that experience to promote 33 Buckets and be a global advocate for water policy and sustainability.”
With 5 million Peruvian citizens lacking clean drinking water, improving access is 33 Buckets’ mission. For more information about their mission and intern experiences, check out the following links.
