Hello, everyone!

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day has a feeling all its own. Many people have the week off and, even though I am working, I can feel the relaxed glow—and I like it.

I'm working on a variety of things, but the most exciting project is a quilt I am making for an exhibit to honor Roberta Horton. Some of you will recognize pieces of Roberta's amazing plaid fabrics...

The shapes will be hand pieced together and it's going to be a challenge. I plan to add embroidery once the top is together. Eventually I would like to teach this technique but, for now, I'm sorting out the best way to sew it. Send happy sewing thoughts my way :-).

I'm going to use a finer thread than I usually do for hand piecing because these shapes are intricate. Superior's 50/2 Masterpiece cotton that comes on bobbins (Super Bobs Set: Soft or Bright) is perfect for this job (and for hand applique).

I will use the #9 Piecing Needle from Tulip and the Easy Threader from Bohin will make threading go fast. LoLo's all-natural Thread Tamer will keep my thread smooth and I will use the P3 Tool to flatten seams as I go.

This is going to travel with me to Hawaii (soon!) and I'll share the other tools and how I pack it all up in a week or two.
My Hand Piecing Notions
I show the hand piecing stitch in a variety of videos on YouTube. This one is cued to jump right to the stitching.

And for those who love a great book, you will find clear and complete instructions for hand piecing in my book, Hand Sewing (also comes as an eBook). Inside you will also find instructions for hand applique, wool applique, and hand quilting.
