President's Message

I had almost completed my president's message for this newsletter when I saw a post on Facebook that made me decide to crumple it up and toss it in the circular file. That reference is for all of us old people who have actually HAD to use a manual typewriter. In all seriousness, the post was for a club that cancelled a show due to the lack of volunteers to hold it. Every year the costs associated with staging a horse show increase. The cost of the facility, the cost of judges, awards, etc. You name it, the cost increases. We rely on volunteers to help keep costs down while providing the experience people desire. Additionally, all club activities are coordinated by volunteers and we are always looking for more members to be involved.

This year we are putting on four shows again. All of these events have openings, and needs, for people to help so we can continue to provide opportunities for people to show off our Arabian horses. The events and contacts to volunteer are:

The Badger Classic show (co-hosted with WDHA), May 24th -26th

Sydney Arnold -

WAHA Sport Horse Value Show, June 1st and 2nd

Jessica Dillingham -

WAHA August Show, August 2nd -4th

Tim Schaap –

Exhibitor Party, Saturday at the WAHA August Show

Nyssa Sheridan -

WAHA Fall Colors Open Show (Date to be determined)

Lerin Hendrickson -

However you choose to enjoy your Arabian horse, share that love with someone else and continue to show the world all the ways that they give back to us.

Overview of Points Programs Offered by WAHA and AHA
Submitted by Nyssa Sheridan
There has been quite a few questions about some of the point programs offered by the Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association and the Arabian Horse Association. Here is a brief overview of the programs. This is not an extensive list of all the available programs. Additional information can be found online at and

Open Incentive Event Program (OEIP)

This program is run through the Arabian Horse Association. Show managers can register their open show events and then participants submit points to the Arabian Horse Association. There are yearly high point awards in different divisions, along with milestone awards. Submitted results become a part of the horse’s competition record on datasource for all to see the open show accomplishments.

WAHA Youth Achievement Awards

WAHA-supported program where youth can earn points in either open show/4H/WIHA events or in “horsemaster” events, such as hippology, volunteering, and attending 4H events or clinics. Cumulative milestone awards. Program is for WAHA Youth Members only.

WAHA Points Program

WAHA-supported program with annual high point awards in different divisions, including endurance, limited distance, and trail riding. Points count from open shows and rated events, but not 4H or restricted breed/color classes.

WAHA Legion of Merit (LOM)

WAHA-supported program where points are earned through the WAHA point system towards a beautiful custom bronze statue. Points count from open shows and rated events, but not 4H or restricted breed/color classes. Members can also earn points from trail riding.

AHA Achievement Awards

Cumulative milestone awards from rated events. Points accumulate towards the Arabian Legion of Merit, Honor, and so forth. Results in the permanent + or / seen behind some horses’ names.

Each of these programs have different annual enrollment fees.

Annual Awards: Points are tracked on a calendar year and compared against other enrolled members. Typical result in “high point” awards for different divisions or categories.
Milestone Awards: Awards are given once members reach a certain benchmark of points either overall or in a division.
Rated Shows: Either AHA Arabian only events or events rated by USEF i.e. a recognized all breed dressage show, reining show, etc.

2019 Midwest Horse Fair Halter Class - Volunteers Needed
The Midwest horse fair class was an idea I had that would enable people of all ages to be able to work with a mentor and be able to show in a special class at the WAHA August show. Sign ups are taken at the Midwest horse fair in April.  We have had participants from 7 to 80 years old. For many years wonderful people have mentored these folks and offered their calm, safe Arabian and half Arabians for use. We salute those of you and your horses that have done this class. It is so fulfilling to see the excitement and sense of accomplishment the newbies have. They are very grateful for the experience.

I am looking for people with calm horses to participate at the August show. Must be willing to spend from roughly 11 AM -12:30 PM on Saturday August 3rd working with a person. Must realize that most of the people have no horse experience. It's important that if you volunteer you follow through -we don't want to disappoint someone.

Thank you in advance. Please contact Debbie Alt if you are interested in participating. This is a wonderful way to do your part introducing a newcomer to the Arabian breed.

Thank you very much,
Debbie Alt
