Civic Engagement in Trump's America & The Power of Your Voice
Protecting and Empowering Our Communities with Unity and Compassion
Last week, Trump signed more than a dozen executive orders. With a stroke of his pen, Trump forced the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines back into the conversation. He took action to defund sanctuary cities, which provide protection from deportation for undocumented immigrants and families. And, on Friday, he signed what is effectively a Muslim ban.
These past couple of weeks in particular, MY Project USA has been a central point of discourse and action in the community. With executive orders in place now that are riddled and fashioned through Islamophobia, racism, spite and anger, our message has been that we the people need to stand firm and stand as one. Last Sunday, we marched toward Columbus airport and protested against Muslim ban. On Monday, we met with our council members to explore the possibilities of making Columbus a Sanctuary City as soon as possible. We are glad to report to you that both actions have been fruitful so far.
As you might know, the Hilltop area on the West side of Columbus, Ohio, is our pilot neighborhood. MY Family Pantry is housed in MY Deah's store in that neighborhood. The neighbors and families that we serve are predominantly Muslim refugees - refugees that hail from lands Trump has banned. There is fear in the community. At our pantry this past Saturday, concerned and fatigue was abound. People are exhausted.
They need your help. We need your help.
Your voice is needed. As the old saying by Desmond Tutu goes, "Silence in the face of injustice is complicity with the oppressor." There are a number of ways you can become involved with MY Project USA, and other initiatives where you can practice your right to free speech, to assemble and to be heard. We encourage you to join hands with organizations within your communities and hold your elected officials accountable for the decisions they are making in their respective offices and through their votes in councils, houses and senates.
In Columbus, we have now called for "The First Columbus Unity Meeting: "The Immigrants in Trumpland." This meeting would create a safe space for all community members that want to get involved in addressing pressing issues. In this space, regular people would be able to join other neighbors, activists, organizations, elected officials and other politicians to address various issues. Please check out the event and join us if you are in Columbus.
There are additional ways to make a difference. Every Saturday through our MY Hilltop Project we work directly with youth in the community, we need volunteers to help facilitate these empowerment activities and we need volunteers to donate meals as well.
On a more micro level, our initiatives, MY Family Pantry, MY Soup Kitchen, MY Deah's store, and others help take care of food, clothing and other instant needs of our undeserved, vulnerable children. Such initiatives help protect them from drug dealers, pimps and gangs. You can help our disenfranchised neighbors by volunteering your time to help pass out meals this Winter or by donating to ensure that these programs continue forward into Spring. We have created opportunities for our youth to get involved in mainstream community activism, through rallies and protests ongoing throughout the city, and through conversations.
Throughout the past year and a half, we have trained more than 200 youth leaders through various workshops, activities, and events. We are one amongst a few Muslim organizations in the United States that is solely focused on the youth leadership development as their main objective. We are proud to foster strong Muslim youth that are building a stronger and more vibrant America.
Working hand in hand with the youth in the Hilltop Community
We have renamed our MY Wedgewood Project to the MY Hilltop Project, as we are focused on working with young people in the Hilltop area and believe that we will be able to have a larger and more holistic impact if we increase our focus on any child in the west side, inshallah.
Each Saturday, we are offering different classes, workshops and activities to various segments of the community that would help these moms and dads, boys and girls, old and young in their paths to have a successful, prosperous life. This would help them in their fight against the pimps, drug dealers and other criminals in their neighborhood.
