Gathering Community To Address Suicide & Depression

Two Sessions For Youth & Families This Saturday

Dear Community,

Several reports across the academia and health circles are confirming that the teen suicides are increasing at an alarming pace, outstripping all other age groups. Washington Post reports in June last year that "Suicide is a serious public health problem among all age groups. Among youth it exacts an enormous toll due to the significant years of potential life lost. In 2017, there were more than 6,200 suicide deaths among adolescents and young adults ages 15-24, making it the second-leading cause of death for that age group."

The core mission of MY Project USA is protecting and empowering our youth through social services and advocacy. We are very concerned about the rise of suicide in teenagers nationwide and within our local community. This weekend, we will be offering a non-judgmental space to raise awareness, learn, vent and heal for our youth, parents and other community members who might be dealing with stress and trauma at the moment.

We are holding two sessions for the community this Saturday, January 11, to talk about the taboo topic of suicide and depression.

12:30 - 2:00 pm @ MY Deah’s Store
3036 Sullivant Ave. Columbus, 43228

3:00 - 5:00 pm @ Hilliard Library Hilliard Room located upstairs
4500 Hickory Chase Way, Hilliard, 43026

There will be certified mental health professionals to help facilitate the sessions and to support individuals dealing with trauma and stress during the  event.

We are also collaborating with the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in their efforts in empowering their community through actions taken by a newly formed Mental Heath Task Force at the Center. We applaud their initiative and are looking forward to working with them for years to come. God willing.

They are also holding an event Mental Health & Grief Support Event tomorrow night. Please see the details on their Facebook page.

Youth Empowerment - Resource Center

Wedgewood Youth Center's Information Session This Saturday

Great Opportunity For Adults & Youth Volunteers
Collaborators & Sponsors Are Welcome

Please join us for an information session about the Game Zone & Resource Center For Youth In the Wedgewood neighborhood.

MY Project USA has secured a house in the Wedgewood neighborhood. We want to use it to offer youth and adult education to the neighbors. We will use it as a Youth Development/Resource Center. We will offer our reading program, ESL classes and several other safe, healthy activities to youth and adults in the neighborhood at this house. We will have free laundry available for youths in our program. We will also have healthy nutritious food available for children in need. Some areas will be set as game zone so the kids could come in the evening or during school break to hang out. Students suspended from the school would be welcomed to stay here in the day time. The programs will be free for all. Monetary donations will be encouraged when deemed okay.

This is a much needed initiative and we believe that it will transform the neighborhood towards more stable and safe neighborhood for all. There is no other recreational facility at the walking distance for the youths and schools are not able to cover these services as well. There are at least 2000 children in just Wedgewood apartments, mostly from Somali Bantu tribe. They are among the kids at high risk of drugs, gangs or being trafficked in Columbus.

At this session, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges with the neighbors and would like to recruit an advisory committee to oversee this project.

Please RSVP at The location will be emailed in response to the RSVP.
