We Dare To Care & Take It To The Next Level
Our Focus: Building Community's Capacity From Within
Recently, in an exclusive interview with Face the Nation, Condoleeza Rice stated, “Education is not a shield against prejudice, but it gives people a fighting chance.” As the newly appointed director of education initiatives, I am humbled to be a small part of such a grand vision of giving underrepresented families in Columbus tools for a fighting chance.
Our organizational response to COVID 19 was swift and intentional. Through careful planning and unwavering volunteers, we were able to convert our literacy program to an online format that kept the students engaged and reading! Just this past week, Reading Warriors celebrated their 8th week online and achievement awards were delivered to participating students. Under MY Wing is an extension of the literacy program that was also a response to the urgency of keeping our students on the path of academic success. This mentorship program provides career exploration and college readiness through intimate meetings with local professionals and college students. Students can see their potential to be successful in the diverse pool of professionals that are so excited to share with them. The first career we will explore is Journalism, and we will be joined by Adora Namigadde, a reporter at WOSU covering the demonstrations and Clare Roth, the host of All Things Considered on weekdays where she taps into the community with daily interviews.
Continuing education opportunities is our way of letting our staff and volunteers know that we value their investment in us. We share that investment with them by offering volunteer training webinars. DARE to CARE is a professional capacity building training scheduled for June 14th, 10 am-5 pm. Critical topics like Building community’s capacity from within, why my project is USA, language equity, and trauma-informed care training are on the agenda.
The call for positive social change is louder than it has been in quite some time. We are answering the call and humbled to have you with us.
Please support these initiatives through your donation today at the BigGive.
