The Big Table Conversations Lead To Tangible Action Items
City officials, Community Leaders, Wedgewood Youth, Parents and Several Organizations United to Protect & Empower Our Youth
Last week, we organized three Big Tables. There were two conversations at the Wedgewood Village Apartments and one at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center. All of the three conversations were very productive.
Special Thanks to President Pro Tem Michael Stinziano of the Columbus City Council for starting his day with our Big Table. His presence clearly indicates one more time that he genuinely cares for his constituents and is investing in protecting and empowering all youth in Columbus and around.
All of the three conversations were very productive. At the Wedgewood tables, we had in-depth discussion about the current status of the Wedgewood community. What has been improved from the last year. What is in the pipelines and what still need attention and further planning to kick off solid efforts. At the Big Table at Noor, we focused on the issues that We had three great conversations with awesome participants. A lot of great ideas were discussed and lot of connections were built. We are now working on some of the tangible ideas that we would announce soon.
Fields Map are submitted & 56 Wedgewood Children Registered to Play in MOSSL This Fall
Thanks to the leadership of the chair of our Soccer Advisory Board, Russ Harris, and our Coach Siyat Mohamed, we have accomplished a lot in the past few weeks. Here is a quick update:
1. The preparation of the Wedgewood soccer field are well on way. Mr. Harris has already prepared the maps for the field and have submitted them to the Wedgewood Management. We are hoping to prepare the fields in two phases. The first phase will be complete in September and then by April 2019, the second phase will also be completed. We will have a professional soccer field by then.
2. We have met with Director Tony Collins of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department to finalize the contract between MY Project USA and the Department. Thanks to Councilmember Elizabeth Brown for sponsoring our soccer program. Thanks to CM Jaiza Page, CM Emmanuel V. Remy and CM Mitchell Brown for Co-Sponsoring this grant. Thanks to Kels Ellingsen for her due diligence. This grant will be available to us in a few days, inshaAllah (God willing).
3. We have registered 56 children to play in the Mid Ohio Select Soccer League (MOSSL), While we prepare the fields, these players will experience the league soccer.
4. The Girls Recreation and Wellness Board is also working simultaneously and we will be announcing soccer and other sports opportunities for girls in the next couple weeks.
Thanks to all organizations and individuals that have contacted us to help with the equipment, supplies and even coaching. As we are preparing to serve more than 300 children in the first year, we are definitely in need of all kinds of supplies and support. Together, we are building a village that would Protect & Empower the youth beyond Wedgewood, in the greater Hilltop area.
We are accepting both monetary and in-kind donations for this program.
About 15,000 Meals & Snacks Distributed to 108 Families
369 Children, 204 Adults and 25 Seniors Were Served Last Weekend
By the grace of God, once again, we were able to serve more than 15,000 meals and snacks to more than 100 families at our weekly pantry. This week's menu included apples, peaches, watermelon, onion and bread. Unfortunately, we had to throw away a pallets of sweet corn that went bad in the absence of walk-in refrigerator in the store. We hope to upgrade our pantry area by including a larger fridge in it.
A huge thank you to the volunteers who helped out with distributing produce on Saturday and with unloading on Thursday. That list includes: Omar Dahshi, Khalil Qutifan, Maryam Habul, Momina Tashfeen, Maryam DzamilaTashfeen, Safia Mateen, Jasmin Osman, Sarah Saadeh, Negash Nejwa, Heba Raslan, Sondos Issa, Hamza Dahshi, Basel Abdel-Rahman, Rahaf Shalash, Bayan Shalash , Ayan Elmi.

She will be serving at the commission for three years.
We are delighted to share this great news that the founder and the Executive Director of MY Project USA, Zerqa Abid will now also be serving as a Greater Hilltop Area Commissioner. This commission serves as the liaise-on between the community and the Columbus City Council. It watches over the safety and development of the neighborhood through different committees. It is comprised of the tested local leaders from within the community to represent the community.
Sr. Zerqa Abid was elected by the commission and was approved to serve on the commission by the City Council on July 30th. She is already heavily involved in the betterment of Hilltop through coalition building and serving the community along with other Hilltop community leaders. We believe that she will do great job at the commission
It's also worth noting that now MY Project USA's executive team includes two Hilltop Area Commissioners: Zerqa Abid and Bill Huffman. Mr. Huffman is serving as our Operating Manager. This is another proof of the great impact that MY Project USA has already made on the Greater Hilltop Area and in Columbus in the past three years.
