I'm Happy To Work And Grow With My Muslim Neighbors
Dear MY Project USA Family,
My name is Alana Gaither and I’m a financial adviser here in Columbus and a board member of MY Project USA. In addition to my career in finance, I’ve been a big sister in Columbus’ Big Brother Big Sister chapter since 2015 and am an active member of Young Jewish Columbus, a networking group for Jewish young professionals.
Growing up in an inclusive, diverse community and being a product of the Akron Public School system, I knew I wanted to find a special organization to deepen my connection with the Columbus community. I was lucky enough to connect with City Councilwoman Liz Brown about a year ago. It was through her devotion to helping MY Project USA receive a grant to help fund a youth soccer program, that I learned of the organization.
I felt connected to the mission of MY Project USA, to help empower the Muslim Youth, for a couple of reasons; I’ve been an athlete my whole life and recognize the powerful impact that organized sports can have on youth. Second, as a Jewish community member, I believe that interfaith relations is a catalyst for positive change in this world and I’m happy to work and grow with my Muslim neighbors.
The biggest impact MY Project USA has had on me thus far was seeing the boys’ soccer teams not only compete in the Mid Ohio Select Soccer League last season but win the U13 Championship. Witnessing the pride on the kids’ faces at their celebratory banquet was priceless. MY Project USA reminds me that it truly does not matter where you come from, how much you have, or what your personal beliefs are; if you work hard, believe in yourself and are given an equal opportunity, you can do anything.
The kids involved with MY project USA and the leadership, especially from President and Founder Zerqa Abid, are what make America so great. I feel honored to be a part of this organization and look forward to continuing to learn from and grow with these special people.
