A Message To Our Members

TAVA Supporters and Members,

The election results has left many transgender people feeling uneasy and concerned about their futures. TAVA urges all transgender persons to immediately get their identity documents processed, if you have not done so already. There is no guarantee that the State Department's rules will stay the same once the new administration is in place.

TAVA has attorneys willing to assist transgender veterans in legal matters free of charge. In addition, there are other resources available to assist in finding legal and financial assistance in getting your documents changed such as
https://translawhelp.org.

Know Your Rights
Get your passport, if you haven't already.
Please do not wait to get your passport if you do not have one or have your name and gender changed on your current passport. Change all identity documents with the federal and state government that you can before the new administration is in place. TAVA has added a Passport Acceptance Facility locator to our website. This makes it fast and easy to find a location nearest you -http://transveteran.org/passport-facility-locator/.

You may also request your name change on your DD 214. TAVA has a guide on how to do this on our website at
http://transveteran.org/for-veterans/pdfs/. Also, if you have a military ID, such as a retiree card, you can get your name and gender changed in DEERS. To locate the nearest place to do this, please visit https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/appj/site.

The
National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) has a guide on their site that provides more information on how to go about process - www.transequality.org/know-your-rights/passports.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) has released information and an FAQ on legal protections for LGBT people. Please visit -http://www.nclrights.org/legal-protections-for-lgbt-people-and-our-families/ for more information
.
