The aim of this publication is to keep you informed and updated concerning the transgender veteran community. The TAVA e-Newsletter is published quarterly. Each issue brings you the latest information on new TAVA initiatives, TAVA partners, conferences TAVA will send a representative to, and news items that are of interest for the transgender veteran and community. Pride is celebrated annually during the month of June, with events continuing throughout the summer months and into the fall. All year round, we celebrate the prideful service, past and present, of our LGBT Veterans and Armed Forces members. We recognize them for their many contributions to society and for their selfless service.

Orlando – Three Years Later 
Three years have passed since the tragic news of the Orlando atrocity. Those horrible images and the attack on our community is still painful. The loss of innocent people is etched in our collective memories. As Veterans, we understand how precious life is. We share in outrage that our freedom was violated. While our brothers and sisters may no longer be here, we carry them in our hearts as we move forward.

  • Fight The Ban Rally, Washington, D.C. 
    On April 10, 2019, TAVA Treasurer Jennifer was invited to be one of the featured speakers at the historic Fight the Ban Rally in D.C. Jennifer joined current and former transgender service members, members of Congress, and transgender leaders to call on Congress to pass legislation to stop this harmful ban once and for all.     On April 10, 2019, TAVA Media Affairs Officer Denny was interviewed concerning compounding mental health challenges for LGBTQ Veterans. You can read Denny's interview here

  • Meeting With Representatives
    On April 15, 2019, TAVA Treasurer Jennifer had a meeting with a Congressional Representative to discuss the transgender military ban and the VA GRS policy. Jennifer is a former lobbyist so she is very well verse in speaking with elected officials.

  • VA VEO Conversation About Demographic Questions Project
    On April 15, 2019, TAVA VP Gene participated by providing feedback to upcoming VA surveys. This was done via a phone interview. Gene read out loud all the questions on a proto-type survey. Then, he was asked to provide initial feedback immediately following reading each question.

    On May 11, TAVA Treasurer Jennifer interviewed with News 12 New Jersey concerning the transgender military ban, her service experiences, as well as discussion about New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy joining 5 other states in declaring full opposition to this policy.     On May 13, 2019, TAVA Board Member Zander was a participant in the Out4MentalHealth workgroup meeting.

  • SERVE Act of 2019
    On May 22, 2019, TAVA provided input for this House Bill. SERVE (Securing the Rights our Veterans have Earned) Act of 2019 seeks to guarantee protections for our nation’s active duty transgender service members discharged from the Armed Forces under the Trump Administration’s discriminatory transgender ban.

  • APUSH Documentary - Don't Ask, Don't Tell 2019
    On May 30, 2019 TAVA VP Gene, TAVA Media Affairs Officer Denny, and TAVA Board Member Zander he TAVA assisted 3 MA-based sophmore high school students with their AP History Video project regarding DADT.   • TAVA Treasurer Receives Inaugural Babs Siperstein Advocate Award
    On May 31, 2019, Garden State Equality held it’s third annual Equality Ball. TAVA Treasurer Sgt. Major Jennifer Long received the Inaugural Babs Siperstein Advocate Award for her relentless advocacy in support of transgender equality in New Jersey and fierce opposition to the Trump-Pence administration’s discriminatory and unconstitutional ban on transgender service members in the military. Governor Phil Murphy presented the award. Congratulations to Jennifer!

  • TAVA Assists With Pentagon G4 Question
    On June 1, 2019, TAVA National President Evan assisted Pentagon G4 with respectful gender identity question for uniform preference. Major Virginia Thomas reached out to TAVA. 

  • UF Health LGBTQ Healthcare Conference, Jacksonville, Florida
    On June 10, 2019, TAVA Board Member Zander presented at UF Health LGBTQ Healthcare Conference in Jacksonville, FL.

  • Pride of the Ocean 2019 "50th Anniversary of Stonewall" Cruise 
    Evan Young, National President of the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA), was invited to be a featured speaker on this historic cruise.  Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer was an honored guest on the cruise. The cruise sailed with Norwegian Cruise Lines onboard the Norwegian Dawn from June 8 – June 15, 2019, for a total of 8-days, 7-nights. The cruise went to New York to Canada & New England.   • NYU Research Interview
    In mid-June 2019, TAVA VP Gene was invitied to by NYU researcher to discuss disparities and challenges faced by LGBTQ Veterans when accessing health care (in and outside of the VA system). 

  • St. Petersburg Florida Pride Festival - June 22-23, 2019
    TAVA Board Member represented TAVA at this year's St. Petersburg Pride Festival. TAVA had a booth at the festival that Zander manned and was the point of contact. For additional information about the festival, please visit

  • 50th Stonewall Anniversary “Voices of Strength Pop-Up” Video Shoot NYC with Gilead
    Evan participated in this video shoot and it is going to be shown on June 26th for 50th Stonewall Anniversary. Evan said this was a very good experience.

  • PRIDE Day at Asheville, North Carolina  
    On June 26, 2019, TAVA Board Member Yvonne attended this VA Pride Day. Yvonne reports that a lot of doctors showed up.

  • World PRIDE NYC - June 30, 2019
    This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. TAVA Board Member Denny represented along with members of American Veterans For Equal Rights (AVER), TAVA, The NYC Veterans Alliance and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Read more:

  • Friend of the Court Brief
    On July 3, 2019 - TAVA and The Modern Military Association of America (MMAA)  filed a “friend of the court” brief urging the justices to decide in favor of LGBTQ workers in a trio of cases on employment discrimination. Oral arguments are scheduled to be presented on Oct. 8.

  • Filing Amicus Curiae
    TAVA is one of many organizations who filed court briefs. The first week of July was the deadline for filing amicus curiae, or friend-of-the-court, briefs. Such briefs are filed by individuals and groups that are not directly involved in a case but want to offer an opinion on which party should prevail.

    On July 24, 2019, TAVA Board Member Zander attended this county health improvement planning meeting.

  • Chamberlain College of Nursing - RN Student Conference
    On August 12, 2019, TAVA VP will be speaking about LGBT Veterans and health care as well as sharing personal experiences with the RN students at Chamberlain College of Nursing.

April 9, 2019 - VA MISSION Act: What Is The Latest On Community Care?
Last June, President Trump signed landmark legislation, known as the VA MISSION Act of 2018, that makes dramatic improvements to how Veterans receive community care—health care provided outside of VA. While the law affects many other VA programs, the changes to community care are among the most complex and far-reaching in recent history. The VA recently signed an MOU with RallyPoint, an online platform serving 1.6M military, Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors. There are more than 420K Veteran-centric discussions on RallyPoint, and the platform is a great place to ask (or answer) questions like "How do I get my Army Medical Records to submit a VA claim?"

May 23, 2019 - Free National Park Service Lifetime Access Pass For Disabled Veterans Announced
Many Veterans, with a service connected disability rating, are entering Federal parks for free with the Lifetime National Parks Access Pass from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. The Access Pass also admits disabled any passengers in their vehicle, and other discounts such as camping, swimming, board launching, and guided tours. Does NOT require 100% service-connected VA disability rating.

May 24, 2019 - Updated VHA Transgender and Intersex Healthcare Directive
There has been an updated FAQ about medically necessary hair removal added to the national directive. The updated VHA Directive now states that Transgender Veterans may receive both laser and/or electrolysis based on their medical needs. To be eligible for Space Available (Space-A) flights, Veterans must have a permanent and total service-connected disability rating.
