Welcome to the 12th issue of The Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) e-Newsletter! The aim of this publication is to keep you informed and updated concerning the transgender veteran community. The TAVA e-Newsletter is published quarterly. Each issue brings you the latest information on new TAVA initiatives, TAVA partners, conferences TAVA will send a representative to, and news items that are of interest for the transgender veteran and community. Fight The Ban Rally - April 10, 2019 - Capitol Reflecting Pool, Washington, D.C. 


On March 29, 2019, The House of Representatives voted to condemn the Trump administration's Transgender Military Ban. The next step is for Congress to pass the bipartisan bill that would stop the ban once and for all. On April 10, join active and former trans service members, members of Congress, and trans leaders on Capitol Hill to call on Congress to pass this legislation and #FightTheBan!

Last month, TAVA was proud to Related imagewelcome Jennifer Long to the Board as Treasurer. Jennifer brings years of experience and leadership to TAVA. Jennifer is a decorated retired Command Sergeants Major. Currently, she is Director of Agency Services for NJ Motor Vehicle Commission and also is a financial service professional with Integrated Financial Concepts.     On October 30, 2018, TAVA joined eight other U.S. veterans organizations on a powerful brief submitted to the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in opposition to the proposed ban on military service by transgender individuals.

    On November 11, 2018,  Coors Light held an event in San Diego to recognize trans military and veteran individuals. TAVA Board Member Zander was selected as one of the trans vets to be recognized.

  • LGBT Safe Zone Training - USF Sacramento Campus
    On November 13, 2018, TAVA VP Gene co-presented an LGBT Safe Zone Training for Nursing Residents at the USF Sacramento Campus.

  • Celebrating Transgender Month
    Held on November 29, 2018 at the Oceanside Public Library, Oceanside, CA 92054. TAVA Board Member Zander was featured panelist and speaker.

  • Joint TAVA/AVER statement re. January 4, 2019 Transgender Service ruling
    TAVA released a joint press release with AVER concerning the January 4th DC Circuit Court of Appeals decision to vacate one of four injunctions preventing the Administration from implementing its ban on transgender military service.

  • OutServe Rainbow Shield Certification Training
    On January 9, 2019, TAVA Board Member Zander completed OutServe-SLDN's Rainbow Shield Certification Training. Rainbow Shield bridges the gap in culturally competent services for the LGBTQ veteran community by providing VSO services and educating veteran service providers and advocates through our online certification program.   • Joint TAVA/AVER Press release re: SCOTUS lifts injunctions banning Transgender military service
    On January 23, 2019, while three courts have filed injunctions against the administration banning Transgender Service, and one court lifting its injunction; the Supreme Court has now lifted the injunctions allowing the Trump Administration to immediately impose a ban on Transgender Service.

    TAVA President Evan interviewed with CTV News regarding the SCOTUS decision to allow the Trump administration to reverse an Obama-era policy on allowing transgender people to serve in the U.S. military.

  • Rolling Stone Interview
    On January 23, 2019, TAVA President Evan was interviewed in Rolling Stone Magazine. Rolling Stone spoke with Evan about his reaction to the court’s decision to allow the ban to go into effect, the impact serving in the military while closeting your identity has on both units and individuals and what this ruling means for the future of the U.S. military and the LGBTQ community nationwide.

  • New Jerseyans Can Change Birth Certificate Under New Law
    TAVA Treasurer Jennifer was interviewed on February 1, 2019 concerning this change to New Jersey birth certificate changes.

  • Tufts University Skype Event
    On February 21, 2019 TAVA Board Member Denny took part in a Tufts University event via Skype. This was a diversity event for Political Science students that included local ROTC folks. Denny spoke about TAVA and AVER.

  • Transgender Military Discussion Panel
    On February 27, 2019, TAVA Treasurer Jennifer spoke at the Temple University Beasley School of Law's Transgender Military Discussion Panel. Jennifer participated as part of a discussion focusing on the constitutionality of the ban, and the experiences of transgender military personnel and veterans. FMI:

  • NYC SAGE Veterans Event
    On February 28, 2019, TAVA Board Member Denny spoke at the The Center in NYC at a SAGE Veterans event. NY State Veterans commissioners and other veterans services were present. Denny spoke about TAVA and AVER for about ten minutes.

  • TAVA Board Member Women’s History Month Keynote Speaker, University of Mary Washington
    On March 18, 2019, TAVA Board Member Kimberly delivered a Keynote Speech for Women's History Month at the University of Mary Washington. "I have never experienced anything like it. By the end the event I was blown away by the love and empathy that was extended to me by the audience. These college students gave me such hope for the future."
  • Quarterly Conference for the Veteran and Family Health Education and Information Committee (N.CA Health Care System)
    On March 25, 2019, Gene represented TAVA as the Veteran Outreach at this quarterly conference. The national VHEI program was created back in 2006. The program is a coordinated approach to planning, delivering, and evaluating evidence-based veteran-centered health education programs, services, and resource materials for veterans and, as appropriate, their family members and caregivers.
  • Interview - The Memphis Mirror - 'Don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t serve'
    TAVA Board Member and Media Director Denny was recently interviewed by The Memphis Mirror concerning Trump's transgender military ban and being forced to hide one's authentic self in order to serve.
  • SAGE Vietnam Veterans Day Event - SAGE HQ, Manhattan, NY
    On March 29, 2019, TAVA Board Member & Media Director Denny gave a 20 minute speech at SAGE presented by the NY State Veterans Commissioner on the occasion of Vietnam Veterans Day, proclaimed by the Governor of NY. Afterwards, Denny was presented with an award proclamation, signed by the Governor of NY. The entire program can be seen at Congratulations, Denny!

    Evan Young, National President of the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA), will be speaking on Pride of the Ocean’s 50th Anniversary of Stonewall Cruise!
