Let’s set the scene – I’m a three-year old toddler playing catch with my dad in a dusty backyard in southwest Texas. My dad, hopeful from the start that I would develop into a reasonably talented athlete, was helping to train me for sure future football glory. In the midst of the fun, he tossed a ball just a little too hard and a little too on-target. Immediately sensing his mistake upon release, he yelled, “DUCK!”

The ball hit me square on the forehead. As I ran inside crying, I screamed a sentence that would become the stuff of family lore:

“Dad hit me in the head with a ball AND CALLED ME A DUCK!”

At the time, I couldn’t figure out what was worse, the injury or the insult.
