GREATER KNYSNA BUSINESS CHAMBER NEWS
Our next Coffee Podium at Elegant – diarize the 26th of August NOW

Every last Thursday at different venues throughout Greater Knysna: our networking events, either a morning Coffee Podium (07h30 for 08h00 – 09h30) or an After Hours Business Affair (17h00 for 17h30 – 19h00).
Our next Coffee Podium - postponed from last month and in collaboration with the Black Business Forum - will be at Elegant Tshisanyama, August 26.

As always up to 10 businesses will be given the opportunity to present themselves to the audience attending on the day.  Your opportunity to get known within the broader business community of Greater Knysna!  The Coffee Podium opens at 07h30 with presentations starting at 08h00.

Please RSVP by LATEST August 24 on info@gkbc.co.za to mingle, network and market your business.  R60 for members, R80 for future members.  Limited availability, covid-regulations to be adhered to, booking is essential!

Keep an eye on our facebook page and website for the September Coffee Podium to take place in Sedgefield.
Knysna Collective – update

After the initial meeting held with several NGO/NPO's, brought together by the inspiring team at KILT (Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching) the next step inventorying the individual initiatives in Greater Knysna revealed close to 175,000 meals are provided for on a monthly basis!  Developing small-scale businesses and food-production projects in order to create long-term sustainable employment is the next step currently being worked on.  Read full statement here.
Thanks go to the organizations who have joined the Collective, and to Action Ads for creating further awareness in last week's issue, which can be found on page 14-15 here.
Rates & Taxes – a continuing story

KAA and GKBC

The motivation to re-instate the 40% rebate for accommodation establishments with max. 8 lettable rooms was brought before Council on the 29th of July.  The downward adjustment was approved, and both KAA and GKBC were thanked in Council for the constructive meetings so far.

You can find recording of item 14.8 on the Agenda in this Council Meeting's recording here.  Affected establishments may have to apply to qualify for the rebate – what the procedure will be to do so is unclear at the moment.

Sedgefield Ratepayers' Association and GKBC

We reported in our last newsletter about some of the other extremely high increases as well.  No comments or adjustments were received with regards to the minutes of the meetings held.

It remains a concern that no further public participation was required after the adjustments of the Draft Budget had been made, and a letter requesting clarification and reconsideration was sent jointly by the Sedgefield Ratepayers & Residents Association (SR&RA) and the Greater Knysna Business Chamber (GKBC).  The letter can be found by clicking on the link.  No response has yet been received.
SANParks and the Knysna Parks Forum – everybody's business

As reported earlier the Greater Knysna Business Chamber has recently been invited to join the Knysna Parks Forum – a multi-level forum of organizations affected by the Knysna estuary.  Both the results of recent research done in the Knysna Estuary and minutes of the most recent meeting make for interesting insights in the importance of the estuary.

It is clear that from individual fishermen to conservation organizations and from home owners to operators, everybody is affected by a healthy, flourishing and biodiverse estuary and surroundings.  The next meeting is scheduled for the 12th of August - members can raise concerns and give input by email on info@gkbc.co.za

INDUSTRY NEWS AND UPDATES
SANParks honours rangers – World Ranger Day

World Ranger Day is celebrated worldwide on July 31st to commemorate Rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the work Rangers do to protect the planet’s natural treasures and cultural heritage.

In Knysna, our Rangers are proud to protect the Knysna Estuary, most biodiverse estuary in South Africa, as well as the indigenous forest (with the largest continued stretch within the Knysna area), fynbos and coastal scrub of the Gouna, Diepwalle and Harkerville areas.

Our Chair Pierre Gouws and Director Hermann Kapp attended the celebration.
TRAINING AND FUNDING
Garden Route Skills Mecca – we've come a long way!

The Greater Knysna Business Chamber was invited to the Garden Route District Municipality's meeting on the ongoing development of positioning the Garden Route as a skills mecca.  Triggered by the Knysna Fires of 2017, a regional and holistic approach to skills development in the Garden Route has formed:
During the last Skills Summit 9 resolutions were taken.  These include to 'Engage with willing partners to explore the development and implementation of projects across the district' and to 'Consider and leverage local skilled people, including retired people, to accelerate the growth of the Skills Mecca'.
The Garden Route Skills Mecca development plan will become part of the Joint District and Metro Approach (JDMA), the full Draft Implementation Plan to be found here.
