In the Garden

• Continue to water new plantings until the rains start.
• With shorter days, starting winter plants from seed at this time of year can be challenging. Buy starts at the nursery, unless you have a greenhouse set up for propagation.
• Spring flowering bulbs are now available, including daffodils, narcissus, ranunculus, anemones, and tulips. Note they may very well flower and brighten your garden before spring, depending on weather.
• Bare-root plants are available for order now. Consider your microclimate when choosing varieties
• If you want to prepare an area for planting in the spring, consider letting nature nurture your soil over the winter with cover crops.
• Don't have a compost pile or worm composting system, but want to start one? Winter is a great time to start a compost system. Attend our Backyard Composting and Vermicomposting Workshop in December to turn your kitchen scraps into a valuable resource for your garden.

December is the perfect month to start a compost or vermicompost (worm-based) system! It's easier than you think.

This workshop includes a combination of lecture, hands-on, and other participatory activities in order to learn the two primary methods of home composting—vermicomposting (worm-based composting) and backyard composting—as well as harvesting and using your resulting compost. The hands-on portion of the class will be focused on vermiculture.
