Here are a few things you can do this month:

UC Master Gardener volunteers educate home gardeners at public information booths, social media, and our Hotline, in addition to leading low-cost, hands-on classes. We host annual events like our recent garden tour, Smart Gardening Fair and upcoming Fall Fest & Plant Sale.

Volunteer opportunities fit your schedule and interests. Join our propagation team, public education committee, or work in the demonstration garden.

Certified Master Gardeners are offered continuing educational opportunities beyond the initial training at special events and annual conferences.

"We owe our existence to a 6-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains."

Health soil is the foundation of a productive, thriving garden. Did you know fall is the perfect time to improve soil fertility for next year's harvest and that well-planned soil management increases drought resiliency, reduces weed pressure and sequesters carbon?

In this low-cost class, you'll learn how to improve soil health in your vegetable beds to absorb and maintain water while improving drainage.

Learn how low-till gardening techniques provide optimal conditions for enhancing and sustaining biotic life in the soil, making essential nutrients more biologically available. Cover crops will also be discussed; why they are important, which to use for your particular needs and how to deal with them once they're grown.
