April Speaker: Bruce Burris

Bruce Burris' Artist Statement

"My current work stems from observations of class and philosophical divides between those who are proponents of dying industries and those who are adamant that these industries must adapt. For some twenty years I lived in an area where there has been a loss of prosperity due to industrial changes - whether that is because of the decline of the coal industry or constraints on the logging industry. My immediate impulse is to recognize the plight of communities which are left behind as industries which rely on extracting natural resources (various forms of mining, timber) pack up and move on."

Bruce moved to Oregon in 2014, he has worked in the field of art and disability culture for over 40 years founding programs and community initiatives designed to support all artists with a particular focus on artists considered by some to experience intellectual differences. He has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship, a Kentucky State Arts Council- Al Smith Fellowship, a Delaware State Arts Council Artist Fellowship, an NEA/SAF Fellowship, a Hallie Ford Foundation Artist Fellowship and was a Seattle Art Museum - Betty Bowen Award Finalist. Bruce’s work was selected for the Portland2016 Biennial, curated by Michelle Grabner. In addition to Bruce’s studio practice he is Director of CEI ArtWorks a studio/gallery devoted to providing professional supports for/with artists considered by some to have intellectual differences, located in Corvallis, Oregon.

Jurying:  Remember! This April meeting is our jurying meeting. If you would like to be able to show your work and participate in our Clothesline sale, please come a little early and bring three ready to hang in public pictures to the lobby of the church. The jury committee members will show you where to put your work. Then come to the meeting. Pick up your work after the meeting. Therese Misner, our Jury Committee Chair, will send you a letter within two weeks. If you can not come, a friend can bring and pick up your work, but be sure this friend is clear about what he/she is doing. :-)

June Elections
Peggy Sharrow is stepping down, and we need a new President! Debi Friedlander said she would be willing to serve as President IF someone would take over as the Brushstrokes Editor. So who could be interested in this?  We also need a new Secretary. Brynn Carter, who has served as a temporary secretary for quite a long time, has other commitments. Please, please remember our organization only runs on volunteers.

PLEASE, CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING FOR ONE OF THESE POSITIONS. The Art Guild can not function without the help of members volunteering.

Clothesline Sale

The Clothesline Sale is just 19 weeks away. It's time to start getting ready!

There will be a change from the previous website. Clothesline Sale information will become available through the CAG site, although that hasn’t happened yet. As far as I know, there will not be changes that effect artists or the registration process.  We will keep you posted through upcoming issues of Brushstrokes.  As always, if you have questions, just Brynn:

We’ll need an image for our 2019 poster.  If you are interested in submitting a poster design, please email Brynn.

Lastly, there is very good news.  It is that Kurt Smith, our dedicated Clothesline Sale performer, has volunteered to be in charge of music.  He will line up all the musicians, make a microphone available, and fill in himself if a performer is unable to be there.  In gratitude to Kurt, we want to pass along information about Kurt’s project, “Local Folk”.  It’s an “all acoustic music event performed by local musicians.”

Local Music will be held at The Arts Center from 7-10 pm on second Tuesdays, beginning April 9th. You can contact Kurt for information.  Be sure to thank Kurt for his contributions to our Clothesline Sale!

Let’s have a great event this August 3rd!

Art Guild Workshop:  the Gouache workshop taught by Mike Rangner is coming up on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 9:30 to 4:00 at the First Christian Congregational Church on West Hills Road (the church at which we have our meetings).  We have about 12 people signed up, but if you want to be on the waiting list, let Peggy Sharrow know. She will be sending all those on the current list an email with more details soon.

Our Art Guild will have a booth at the Corvallis Fall Festival, the weekend of September 28 & 29.  Participants must be juried members of the guild and should display their best work since the Festival is a juried event and we need to uphold their quality requirements.   In addition, for each spot the participant must split the $395 booth fee and sign up for two-2 hour shifts as well as help with set-up and take down.  The Fall Festival Committee is requiring we have at least 4 artists to represent the Corvallis Art Guild.   Please let me know as soon as possible. If you are interested in participating, or if have questions please contact Kristi Hager at 541-908-5641 or email at I need to know by June 1st, 2019.

Help us put the Art in STEAM! Exhibitor space available at the da Vinci Days Summer Festival; it's only $50 and we do NOT take a percentage of your sales. Please go to for an application. Thank you!

The Watercolor Society of Oregon invites submissions from its members for their Fall and Spring Conventions.  Alice Tetamore's painting, Hanging Out in Costa Rica, was juried for the Spring Show by Jean Pedersen, award winning artist with international exhibits of her work.

The 80 paintings that have been selected will be on exhibit in April at the Oregon Society of Artists facility at 2185 Park Ave., Portland.  From this display 20 pieces will be selected for the traveling show which can be viewed in the Albany Public Library, May 1-June 30, 2019.  Alice says, "this “clothes line” painting reminds me of childhood, hanging out the laundry on the clothes line, and simpler times.  The smell of the dried sheets and clothing was such a pleasant, fresh fragrance."
